frozen grain

I've been doing g2g with rye with some success for a while now. The feed store was out so I got a bag of finch seed and used that. last week when I went to g2g the wbs into two 6 quart rye bags I noticed what appeared to be penicillium in 2 of my wbs quarts. I pulled those and decided to hold off for a week on a transfer just to make sure no other nasty stuff sprung up in the wbs batch (glad I did because I got two more). I thought I remembered reading that you can freeze grain if you can't use it right away so I tossed the rye bags into the freezer, not sure why really, seeing as they mail sterilized rye bags these days. probably would have been fine leaving them out while the birdseed was under observation. is this grain trash or should I thaw and use? or PC again?

If the grain has any water content at all, and you froze it, you can expect it to be pretty goopy when it thaws. If it was dry then it didn't ever really need freezing at all. If this grain is in a situation where you PC'd it, then froze it, then you just need to toss it. You really.. can't ever freeze grain. At all. There's no time that that's a good idea.

I was wondering this myself, but
What about frozen sub?
Say I made more sub for a tray then I needed, put the rest in the freezer. It's a coir/verm mix.
Would it still be usable if I resurrected it back to life?

That doesn't seem practical at all. You can fill your freezer with other useful stuff instead (like food).
It might be ok in the freezer but this proposal defies any logic I can come up with. Just don't make more than you need to.

If it's coir verm you should just leave it in whatever you prepped it in. I keep an oven bag of coir around for like a month after I make the batch without any issues. If you're going longer than that... just prep less. In a proper bag or bucket it should be usable and retain moisture for quite some time. I've heard 2-3 months but I just don't think it's too reasonable to expect to make more sub than you can use in a Q of the year, in one sitting. It's a hobby, it's got periodic things that come up that you have to do. Repetition is the primary ingredient of success so.. spacing stuff out too far doesn't carry the benefit as well. Plus, it only takes 1 month or less to produce clean grain spawn, so, anyone should feasibly be able to use up any left over substrate in that time period.
As for what would happen if you froze it, I have no idea. It's not like grains where there are cell walls that can be shredded, but it could throw off water content.
