Did I just pay for an unusable pressure cooker?
    #23700789 - 10/02/16 04:18 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I received a pressure cooker in the mail a few days ago that I had bought off eBay. $60 with shipping for an old (OLD) National Pressure Cooker 25qt. The thing is a monstrous tank from the 1930s and it wasn't until today when I opened it up to clean it that I found out it's pretty badly pitted. So my question is: how much pitting is too much pitting? Because I'm reasonably sure this is an example of too much pitting.

Possible solutions:

1. I'm currently keeping an eye out for estate sales and the like for a replacement PC (or perhaps a replacement bottom if I'm so lucky).

2. I read on one forum that a competent TIG welder could repair deep pitting in a clean, aluminum PC. Any experienced welders care to weigh in?

3. Finally, in the same forum, someone suggested that a machine shop could use a "metal spray technique" (not something I've previously heard of) to build up general thickness, making the walls thicker all around and bringing the damaged spots up to appropriate thickness.

So, what do you guys think? Shall I chalk this up as a loss, or do some experimenting and then bring it up to pressure out in a field somewhere?

Damn can you send it back? That's not my area of expertise, but i know walmart sells a presto 16 qt brand new for around $70. I do know unless you know someone who tig welds you'd probably pay more for the repairs than the actual pc.

Yeah, a good TIG welder should be able to fill those holes and refinish the surface.

IMO, it wouldn't be worth it, just buy a new one, or one that's in better shape.

Seems pretty sketchy to me, very deep pitting.
I wouldn't trust that thing to not turn in to a bomb when it's at pressure.

As for repairing it, I can't comment on that unfortunately.

I don't think I'll be able to send it back; there was no indication of pitting in the listing, but it was also listed "as-is" and with a no refund policy.

I might go ahead and try pricing the TIG welding (and maybe look into the machine shop thing) and see what the cost might be. I definitely can't afford a new-new PC at this time, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled for another older one (and taking a much harder look at the insides now).

As a side note, if I do decide to try getting it repaired, I'll do my first test run with it out in a field with a camping stove. I'll even film it so that when it goes kablooey, I can share it will you fine folks.  :horrifying:

Pitting won't turn a PC into a bomb, even if it punched a hole through a pit it's releasing pressure. PCs become bombs when the pressure is not being released at all until the lid fails.

Personally I would fire it up and see if it can hold pressure. If it can then use it and look into buying a new one later.

I should hope government computers are a bit more discerning...

:whathesaid:
I'm sure you can get a few good runs out of it. The worst, would be if the pitting blew through, but it'd probably just be ear-splittingly loud. Like, make ya deaf. Can you use it outside?

Refinishing would cost as much as a new presto for sure.

I think that statement about the gov't was in reference to a semi-recent event

Ya pressure cooker and explode.  Terrorist bake bombs out of pc.  Probably why the flag system fails is there are too many comms mentioning flagged words.

That's good to know that it's not going to explode at the very least. I'm not gonna lie, while I was trying to search for a rule of thumb about deep pitting in PCs, I read one woman's story about how when hers failed, it was from a crack in the lid and when it blew, half of the lid shot through the ceiling and bounced around in the attic and the other half buried itself in a wall and broke through the tile on the other side. I got pretty nervous after that.  :wowz:

I'll give it a test run outside then. It would be nice to not have to front the cash for either a baby PC or a fix job on this monster. I've grown pretty attached to it.

Yeah that makes sense on the lid doing that shit with a crack. PCs with pitting IME just pit more and more until eventually a small hole comes out and your PC suddenly can't hold pressure lol

Yeah a lid fail is going to be a lot worse than a small hole punching out. But it's like when the overpressure valve in a sterilizer goes. It's loud as fuck but not dangerous as long as you don't get blasted by the steam or something.

Lol yeah just sounds like a shotgun just went in your house, and everything within a 5 foot radius will get covered in water as the steam gets condensed back into water. Fuck literally half my kitchen was soaked afterwards, I hate cleaning that shit up. So sad
