Going Commercial

Hello everyone!
I've been a lurker on this forum for years now, and growing mushrooms for even longer.
With that said, I haven't grown anything for a couple months and lost all of my cultures. So here I am, starting anew in a new house. My plan is to grow enough to sell. I've been selling wild harvested mushrooms to a couple restaurants in my area to gain some rapport so I have a market once these things have grown out. I'll start small and if things go well I'd like to expand slowly with my market.
My plan is to grow oyster mushrooms to begin with as they are what I have the most experience with. In addition, the restaurants I've been working with have expressed interest in buying these. As such, I got a couple different LC's from spore works: 1) Blue oyster 2) Pink Oyster 3) Pearl Oyster 4) Phoenix Oyster and got a bonus syringe with what is called Beech Clam Mushroom.
Ive grown the first 3 but never the phoenix oyster nor the beech clam mushroom. Though preliminary research suggests they grow similarly to oysters. Anyhow, I have 3 jars of pearl inoculated and 2 jars each of pink and blue ! My plan is to expand these qt rye jars into filter patch bags w/ grain -> straw logs.
In addition, I just moved into a new house with a big basement so I'm looking to build a 6x6 (tentative) fruiting chamber down there because I think its going to take some serious work
I'll post some pics of the jars later tonight as the myc is already visible. In addition ill try to get some pictures of the basement so I can get some input on how to build this FC. Anywho, Im super excited about this and would love lots of input and criticism.

So here are some pictures of the basement. A little cluttered, all the roommates are still trying to get settled in.

Pros: - Lots of room - some painted cinderblock walls - cement floors - A suprising amount of outlets and Flourescent tube fixtures (kind of makes me wonder if some of the old tenants were growing something down there?) - A functioning sink - counter space - A heater
Cons: - Exposed insulation - No drain
So, the exposed insulation I think will be easy enough to deal with, the lack of drainage will be a little trickier and needs more research. Input on this would greatly appreciated. I suspect there is probably a pretty heavy spore load down there because basements apartments in this area are notorious for being moldy/mildewy and there is all the exposed insulation (i realize this insulation isn't really in the pictures).

You forgot to mention in your cons list ventilation? Might be the biggest problem.

Ah I forgot to mention the vent. There is a exhaust fan next to the washing machine that operates with a switch. I can only assume this exhausts off of the side of the house.

Might want to think about remodling sooner or later. Something that can be easily cleaned when mold starts kicking in.

Remodeling what specifically? I plan on boxing out a part of the room with 2x4's and plastic sheeting. I guess I may go the false floor route to keep water from pooling too much in my FC from cleaning, humidity, etc.
I'll post some pics of my loose plans tomorrow when i wake up tomorrow.

I see lots of potential!
Start with your lab area and clean out a section for your SAB or flowhood. Its best to have a sealed area with some forced HEPA air but not necessary for startup. My main issue is always clutter so anything thats not grow related and doesn't have a purpose get it out of there!
I would start small, 21 quart presto, some jars, SAB or glovebox/tyvek sleeve box, a martha style setup. Learn your shit, start growing 10-20 lbs a week out of that then scale up once you know there is a demand and you know what your doing, take a look at my sig for my smaller grow that i started off with, i would highly recomend not using a prefab shelving and instead buy some 1/2 conduit and some heaver galv pipes for the uprights and build your own shelving, welded and galv sprayed if possible. Cleanup will be 10x easier.
Before you do anything large scale i would look into renting or borrowing a concrete grinder and slope the slab to some floor drains with sump pumps.

Funny you should chime in Grower, I was just looking at the shelving grow chamber in your sig. I'm sitting on a 21 Qt. pressure cooker, and glove box right now and 10-20 lbs a week is exactly where I intend to be come December/January.
I appreciate the suggestion with shelving. Sadly, I don't think my landlord would be super receptive to me doing something that drastic to the house. With that said, I dont think that was mentioned specifically in my lease .

Lol yea thats why I recently moved. You could always do it then just full the holes later lol. Even if he does hold your deposit you will have made thousands Of dollars off it. Im not saying wrecking a house to grow it is cool but if you need to drill some harmless holes and level out the concrete then go for it. Heck he might even want some floor drains, would prevent future flooding issues.

Hmm, I'll need to do some research on that. I've never done concrete work, and haven't done a whole lot of plumbing work before but if it looks fairly simple and cheap I may give it a go.

Heres a way around the concrete work i've seen someone do. Make a false floor and put a drain on it that goes to a tiny bucket with a pump to discharge water. I've seen it on older homes that have no basement.

So here are a couple of the jars so far. The blues and pearls are looking great but the pink oysters have little and wispy growth so far. It may already be too cold for these things here. While it gets into the 70's most days its been getting cold at night (Great for sleeping, not so great for warm-weather fungi though I guess). I'm going to give these a shake this afternoon as they're looking ~30% colonized.

I'm hoping to put an order in for a bunch of filter patch bags today to expand these jars into as well as a source of cheap rye. The local health food place has it for $1.39/lb. and it would be great so bring that down considerably since I'll be using upwards of 50 lbs every month or so.
I've also been trying to figure out FAE and humidity requirements based on a 6'x6' footprint. This is what I have so far:

Not sure how to include the filter resistance into this calculation. I also did this late night so my calculations may not be super accurate just yet but I think this gives me a rough estimation of my needs.

I would up your air exchanges in your calculation. I don't think 5 per hour would work for oysters packed into a small area. I did some similar calculations here just to calculate a rough fogger size. I wouldn't recommend trying to work through all the numbers to get a perfect solution, just get yourself close, oversize slightly and dial back based on your conditions.
Also, if I'm understanding you correctly, there's no need for a filter in an FC.

Yeah, I think GGMM says 5-8 FAE an hour. I'm going to go to the hydroponics store in town and see what they have in stock and see if they've got any recommendations on fans/foggers.

My fans are 440 cfm and my chamber is 500cf. I probably get around 200 CFM after restrictions and im seeing some more lanky than usual fruits. Another key factor is air circulation to keep stems short.

Thanks grower. Do you think an oscillating fan to "circulate" the air in addition to a fan to replace the air in the chamber would suffice?
I went to the hydroponics store yesterday but that was a total bust. Kind of an awkward store tbh.

Hey guys and gals..
Check this bad boy out.
I built one and my fruit is absolutely beautiful.
I still waiting for the swamp cooler pad and the circulating pump to arrive, but the airflow help so much.
My grow room is 12'x09'x08'... The box fan is 20"x20".. they can be found as low as fifteen dollars at ebay. The pump I bought is 160 gal. per hour 9 dollars Swamp cooler pad 20 some dollars..

Very cool! I'm in a part of the US that I will very soon need to heat my grow room rather than cool it. Honestly, I may never really need to cool the grow with it being in the basement. That is a really good instructional though.
