Freeze shiitake blocks?
    #23699621 - 10/02/16 09:33 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Should I be freezing shiitake blocks or is that a bad idea?

We have like 1000 blocks that were waiting on us to finish making the fruiting room. Naturally some started to pin in the bags as the Temps drop at night. We have a big freezer so I threw a bunch in that were fruiting too soon.

I remember reading somewhere a good pinning trigger is to freeze the block. But the few I pulled out, soaked, and put into fruiting are covered in green mold and don't show any signs of fruiting.

Although I didn't give them time to thaw before dunking. But I hope I didn't kill 50+ blocks by freezing them? Obv shiitake freezes outdoors in natural environments but those are usually on logs, not sawdust/chip blocks.

So any info pls help, much appreciated.
Is it a good/bad idea to freeze whole shiitake blocks before fruiting them?

How cold did they get? Odds are they're probably fine, though you'll see a reduced yield because of the high cell death from the freezing process. When I've stored blocks long term I try to keep them close to freezing (a few degrees either side) and avoid hard freezing. Also a deep chill will slow down fruiting, usually by a week or more; just give them some time and try to isolate the infected blocks from the healthy.

Okay thank you.

I do think I might have frozen them a little too rough though. From 65f room straight to 0f freezer.... Def killed some on accident...

But anyway I'm pulling them out now. I'll give them a week or two to thaw and regenetate. Hopefully I won't losee too many and hopefully they still produce a decent first flush
