Oregon reishi? * 1
    #23698544 - 10/01/16 10:03 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Just got back from the oregon coast range and wondered if these guys were some reishi that would be worth turning into tea.

They were growing on a downed fir. The longer one with the "stem" is somewhat flexible in the stem area and the surface has cracked showing nice white flesh underneath
The paper towel wipe was from the top which I was told could be covered in brown spores

I read that Ganoderma applanatum is considered a European species, is this true Mrcloudy?  I know you're the resident Gano expert.

I thought Ganoderma megaloma might be the proper name?  I am clueless, but maybe you can elucidate the subject for me.

G.applanatum is screwy. There are very real differences between geographically isolated varieties. The West coast variety is different from the East coast variety and both of them are different from the European variety. But they all match exactly microscopically and the DNA is inconclusive. Hence my use of the term sensu lato because honestly it cant get much more precise than that until further research is done to figure out what causes the differences.

The west coast variety often grows stacked like pancakes and will often take on white flesh after the first year or two, the other two varieties have a brown flesh. The East coast variety has a sterile rim that goes around the outside of the margin, neither the west coast or the European variety has this feature. Although interestingly enough it appears that the one in your photo does indeed have this... That is the distinguishing feature for G.megaloma, but I don't know if G.megaloma could be considered its own distinct species or just a variety of G.applanatum.
