Fun Weekend Mushroom Hunting - My finds!
    #23678163 - 09/25/16 09:57 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I was hunting up in Northern Michigan, mainly for edible finds.

I found one bright orange cinnabar chanterelle, but no pic!  Just in case someone was wondering if chanterelles were in Northern Michigan, they are!  No one picks them up there, but at least I found one.

Main edible find was wild hericium:

After I cooked this piece chopped up in cream sauce there wasn't much left to it.  I would eat it again, though.  Probably need large quantities to really enjoy it because it cooks down so much.

----------------------------------------

Then on my dad's property was slippery jacks, with the help of people on this forum, I narrowed it down to either suillus pseudo brevipes or suillus granulatus.

Here they are cooked:

I tried using them as a tofu substitute, where I put the in a schezwan type dish which was with peppers and really spicy.

The dish tasted great, and these mushrooms also tasted very good in the dish... BUT those buggers are slippery!  It was like raw oysters in a cooked dish... but they are worse than raw oysters I think.

If I am ever going hungry, I think slippery jacks are great free food, but I probably wont eat them again.  Now I do think the species I had might be amazing dehydrated.

-------------------------------
Pholiota Destruens

On our property we have an old poplar forest with downed poplar woods.  These amazing looking mushrooms were growing naturally in it.  They looked so good, I wen through the ID process and my Mushrooms Demystified said they were edible.

Problem was I cooked one up to sample it, and after 2 bites,  I realized they tasted bad.  It was like a bitter taste, almost to the point it tasted like chemical flavor.

Really disappointing because it was a great texture and cooking feel.  I would not suggest this mushroom as "edible", unless my specimens were just bad or something.

-------------------------------

Other neat finds!  Some of these are not edible, and others, I have no clue whether you can eat them.

First is a mystery find!!! ???

I also took pics of some cool looking poison amanitas.

2016 was a good year, +5 lb of Morels, and I ate 8 new species of wild mushrooms:  Herecium, Chanterelles, Black Trumpets, Parasol Mushroom, Fairy Ring Mushroom (marasmius oreades), Wild Oyster, Slippery Jacks, Honey Mushrooms (found over 100lb, froze 4lb in my freezer.)

Number 4 is a Helvella species, not collected for the table.

The one you ate, what name did you match with in Mushrooms Demystified?  I would call this Hemipholiota (populnea).  I don't find anything about it being edible.  Is it listed as such in MD?  My copy is stored right now.

It's called pholiota destruens in Mushrooms Demystified.

The description pegs it with poplar trees and it is given the name "destroy" because it breaks down the poplar wood fast.
