something i just heard
    #2369856 - 02/22/04 11:28 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

a friend of mine is 19 years old and a single mother. she lives with her parents, who basically coddle her through the whole thing... paying for everything... including stuff like a personal trainer to get her back into shape, babysitter so she can still attend a local college (which they pay for)... all inclusive. why not though... they're loaded. both are dentists raking more than $500,000 combined a year.

you wanna know what she just told me?

just for being a single mother, she got a federal grant for $4,500.

what the hell is that?

/end rant.

Was this for school?

What was the name of the grant? Is this a Pell grant?

mushmaster asks:

what the hell is that?

That, my friend, is what Lyndon Baines Johnson called "The Great Society".

It's called rewarding irresponsibility. The more incentives you give for a behavior, the more of that behavior you are likely to get, hence the abysmal failure of state run welfare programs to stop the cycle of poverty.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

So we should punish people for their poverty by taking away welfare? How far do you really think scrapping welfare would go towards ending poverty?

Oh and Mush, why shouldnt the girl get the loan? Im sure her parents have paid enough tax to warrant it.

A grant is not a loan. Grants do not have to be paid back.

So far, I'm totally insupport of this. she didn't have an abortion, her parents work hard, and shes doing great.

Rewarding promiscuity is great!

Fuck yea it is.

Out of all the places my taxes could have gone this is hardly the worst... Now to fix that pesky income tax problem, along with the bloated defense budget(2nd ammendment isn't just for bragging rights after all)

Actually, I am kinda pissed that this $4500 didn't go to help install a few wires in a Tomahawk, to help with rebuilding Iraq, or to help pay off the massive debt to the banks....

Huh? Are you saying it's punishment to not give away free money?

Did you even read what I wrote? What year did Lyndon Johnson start the 'Great Society' programs? How effective have these programs been in stopping poverty? How come there is a correlation with the growth of the welfare state and the increase in single parent families and children born into homes with no fathers? Did you know that children without a father figure in the home are more likely to become criminals and hence are more likely to grow up taking resources from the system instead of contributing to it? Do you think it is wiser to break the cycle of poverty or to perpetuate it? If you throw billions of dollars at a problem and the problem has gotten worse, what is more wise, to re-assess the tactics and strategy used to attack the problem or to increase funding of failed policies?

No, Ive heard it all before j/k!

Quote:

Please remember I am English so Im discussing the issue in general terms, not solely from a US point of view...

I agree you make good points and Im not saying welfare is the best way to help the poor and that it should remain in its current form.
However, I still believe that when wealth is unevenly distributed and you have a whole tier of society that is creaming off most of the wealth that society produces you will always end up with people living in poverty because there just aint enough to go around.
You seem to feel that giving the poor money is the problem as it gives them no incentive to get out of that position?
Quote:

How come there is a correlation with the growth of the welfare state and the increase in single parent families and children born into homes with no fathers?

We could also suggest that there is a correlation between a relaxing of society's attitudes towards single mothers and sex in general and the increase in single parent families couldnt we? You seem to think most single women are getting pregnant solely because they can get welfare. It obviously plays a part as financial concerns are very important when having a child but I doubt the fact that welfare is available is the primary concern of a woman who is pregnant. Of course, some women may indeed only have children to live off welfare but I would guess they are in the minority.

Quote:

Did you know that children without a father figure in the home are more likely to become criminals and hence are more likely to grow up taking resources from the system instead of contributing to it?

Sorry but there is not enough information there to make a valid point. I would need to know the average economic postion of these fatherless families who produce these criminals to see if there is a correlation there as well. Furthermore, how many children who come from a family with a mother only, but one that is considered wealthy, go on to become criminals?

Its all very well bitchin about the poor but in reality if government was run as efficiently as possible and tax payers money wasnt spent fighting wars for big corporations then things like welfare wouldnt even be an issue.

Amen.

And not forgetting corporate welfare dwarfs welfare for the poor.

And also not forgetting that dumping thousands of people off welfare into the labour market would drive wages through the floor for the rest of us. Strange how the neocons want to throw people off welfare and yet are so uptight about immigration and the *nigras* taking their jobs. If only they'd think these things through..

Wait, I'm having some difficulty understanding this. If the grant isn't for school, what's it for?
