I just spent $900 for a nice Dell Inspiron 17 7778 laptop. I will be using it to produce electronic music. I haven't started yet because I'm finishing my current song on my old laptop. But I think I will have a great time making music on my new laptop.
My new laptop has 12 gb RAM, 919 gb actually usable hard drive, Intel i7-6500U @ 2.50 Ghz 2.60 Ghz (dual core with each core being able to process two threads, so it's kind of a quad core). I had to download WiFi and audio drivers because the ones the laptop came with were shit, but the new drivers are great.
It also has 4K screen display, which isn't relevant for music production, but is nice for pics/videos. Oh, it's also 17.3" screen.

What are you guys using to make electronic music on your computers?
I know of FL, but was curious what other software is decent for such things.
OP, for $2000 you should be able to get a nice setup.

I use FL. A simple search can give you your answer, but I have heard people mention Reason and Ableton a few times

Toshiba and HP are pretty good quality an bang for buck you could probably get something really really nice for 1g and spend the other g on something else.

I've had 2 HP laptops and they were both shitty. The last one had HD failure when it was still under warranty. Got it replaced, and the thing crapped out again after the warranty was up. I'll never buy an HP again.
I'm in the market for a new laptop too. My budget is about the same as OP. I would use it for music production and engineering too. But more important is a great display. I got spoiled by my macbook pro with NVIDIA. The new ones are even better.
I was looking at thinkpads. I was leaning that way. New macbooks are ridiculously expensive.
It seems like everyone buys computers online these days. You can't go to a store to try one out anymore. One thing that is really important to me is a nice feeling keyboard. I type fast and shitty keyboards really bother me.

That's crazy money for a laptop. Computers have only gotten better and producingnmusic isn't requiring much more power. If it makes you happy spend that on an alineware but you can get good comopters for 800 bucks.

Thanks for the replies err'body.
I use Reaper for recording which is free and damn good for my acoustic demos.
I keep reading reviews for Lenovo ThinkPads and a lot of people say the old ones are better than the new. Maybe I'll just really fix up my old laptop? I do want a solid state drive tho.

Go with a refurbished fully loaded macbook pro. about 1.5k refurbished vs 8k new, and they sure as hell work like 8k computers.

They do some annoying shit with hardware whitelisting. A generic replacement battery for my computer was $30, but it actually refuses to even start up with it plugged in, or charge the battery if it's connected while it's already on. Their version of the same capacity battery was almost $200. Same thing with wifi cards, if it's not on their list it will refuse to work with it.

I'm looking at getting a used/refurbished MacBook to produce (music) on. The ones I was looking at were 500-700 range, I think these were MacBook airs from ~2013. friend of mine swears by his for music production and his is even older than that.
I've never had a Mac before, is the transition weird? I feel like I'd get used to it and grow to prefer it pretty quickly.
Think pads are legit. My lil bro has had one for years and it's built like a tank.

Macbooks seem to be built extremely well, but I am a Windows guy till death.

At this point, I think I am going to order another custom Toshiba, but I am going to investigate for another couple weeks. That, and I'm going to get my older one checked out. I really would miss having an optical drive. I still make CDs...
& I cannot let go of Windows.

Yeah mine has held together pretty well, strong hinges and a substantial metal frame inside the plastic. A few mostly cosmetic things have broken on it, but it's a lot more solid than the typical consumer laptop where the whole structure is just plastic.

I kinda want to switch to a Mac when I can spare the money. My Thinkpad is extremely heavy. I used to use Macs a lot in the 90s but haven't used OSX-era ones too much.

What do you think about the abandoning of optical drives?
Everything is going thin/lighter.
I never minded my laptop having some girth; some of these new light ones seem a little too thin.

Since I haven't bought a new laptop since 2012, I am admittedly surprised, but I guess with the whole thinner/lighter craze, I shouldn't be.
I guess I will just have to purchase an external optical.

might wana think about getting a laptop with thunderbolt since that's the future and all audio interfaces tend to be going that direction... so razer or macbook would be killer..

if you go pc make sure you get this,,
https://bitsum.com/parkcontrol/ -- it's called park control
by default windows parks alot of your cores so to get them to all run and have it run at optimum speed..you unpark all of them with this... it's free.. also make sure you select all processors in msconfig >boot>advanced lot's of people hate on windows because they don't realize this and there only using like 2 out of 4, 6 or 8 processors and cant understand why there pc is running at shit speed

It's not necessarily the best but newest gen i7 are the best processors to get but try to get one that is 6 or 8 core..actually apple rips people off with overpriced parts.. but I can understand the appeal

I think my laptop is something like 6 lbs, so it gets pretty hefty to haul around.
I don't find I use an optical drive very often at all. Last time I tried to buy CD-Rs to burn for the car, the people at the store told me they don't even carry them any more. My laptop came with a DVDRW drive but I swapped it out for this adapter caddy that lets you put in another 2.5" hard drive.
My last computer before this was a cheap netbook, so I was already used to not having an internal optical drive. I think the external one I got for that was $30 or so.

Man, this thread got me researching laptops.
I really like my macbook pro, but I sorta want something windows based and not a million dollars
So I checked out the ASUS ZENBOOK UX501VW-DS71T 15.6" 4K. It seems pretty fucking good at a grand less than a MBP. But people say the trackpad and build quality aren't as good. Also the keyboard has mixed reviews. Those are the things that are important to me. And it's touch screen which my wife wants for some reason. I'm not excited about her rubbing her dirty fingers all over the beautiful display, which is one of the perks of this machine. The specs are really pretty comparable to a MBP.
I also checked out the Dell XPS 15, but there are SO many bad reviews about crappy build. But the ones that work seem good. I shy away from laptops that break though, I been through that.

I like mac. You can run mac and windows on the same computer
Don't get a mac if you are into hardcore gaming, but anything else is great.
I bought a mac pro retina and I love it. looks nice, feels nice, runs flawlessly (even with ps2 emulators) and is just an over-all great experience.
I grew up with p.c. but since I bought this mac I use a computer more than ever. Even started to get into programming.
Edit: To add, I can do pretty much everything p.c. related on this mac. I switch over to the windows partition and use torrents and all kinds of other shit that is window's related.

The Toshiba Tecra A40 has an optical drive and can be customized with 16gb ram, an i7 processor, and a 512 gig solid state drive...
Hmmmm..

Just spent some time reading up on the Razer and I think I am sold; I'll just get my old Toshiba fixed and keep it for burning CDs and other old school stuff.
How the hell did I not find the Razer with all the searching I've been doing?!
