I just spent $900 for a nice Dell Inspiron 17 7778 laptop. I will be using it to produce electronic music. I haven't started yet because I'm finishing my current song on my old laptop. But I think I will have a great time making music on my new laptop.
My new laptop has 12 gb RAM, 919 gb actually usable hard drive, Intel i7-6500U @ 2.50 Ghz 2.60 Ghz (dual core with each core being able to process two threads, so it's kind of a quad core). I had to download WiFi and audio drivers because the ones the laptop came with were shit, but the new drivers are great.
It also has 4K screen display, which isn't relevant for music production, but is nice for pics/videos. Oh, it's also 17.3" screen.

What are you guys using to make electronic music on your computers?
I know of FL, but was curious what other software is decent for such things.
OP, for $2000 you should be able to get a nice setup.

I use FL. A simple search can give you your answer, but I have heard people mention Reason and Ableton a few times

Toshiba and HP are pretty good quality an bang for buck you could probably get something really really nice for 1g and spend the other g on something else.

I've had 2 HP laptops and they were both shitty. The last one had HD failure when it was still under warranty. Got it replaced, and the thing crapped out again after the warranty was up. I'll never buy an HP again.
I'm in the market for a new laptop too. My budget is about the same as OP. I would use it for music production and engineering too. But more important is a great display. I got spoiled by my macbook pro with NVIDIA. The new ones are even better.
I was looking at thinkpads. I was leaning that way. New macbooks are ridiculously expensive.
It seems like everyone buys computers online these days. You can't go to a store to try one out anymore. One thing that is really important to me is a nice feeling keyboard. I type fast and shitty keyboards really bother me.

That's crazy money for a laptop. Computers have only gotten better and producingnmusic isn't requiring much more power. If it makes you happy spend that on an alineware but you can get good comopters for 800 bucks.

Thanks for the replies err'body.
I use Reaper for recording which is free and damn good for my acoustic demos.
I keep reading reviews for Lenovo ThinkPads and a lot of people say the old ones are better than the new. Maybe I'll just really fix up my old laptop? I do want a solid state drive tho.

Go with a refurbished fully loaded macbook pro. about 1.5k refurbished vs 8k new, and they sure as hell work like 8k computers.

They do some annoying shit with hardware whitelisting. A generic replacement battery for my computer was $30, but it actually refuses to even start up with it plugged in, or charge the battery if it's connected while it's already on. Their version of the same capacity battery was almost $200. Same thing with wifi cards, if it's not on their list it will refuse to work with it.

I'm looking at getting a used/refurbished MacBook to produce (music) on. The ones I was looking at were 500-700 range, I think these were MacBook airs from ~2013. friend of mine swears by his for music production and his is even older than that.
I've never had a Mac before, is the transition weird? I feel like I'd get used to it and grow to prefer it pretty quickly.
Think pads are legit. My lil bro has had one for years and it's built like a tank.

Macbooks seem to be built extremely well, but I am a Windows guy till death.

At this point, I think I am going to order another custom Toshiba, but I am going to investigate for another couple weeks. That, and I'm going to get my older one checked out. I really would miss having an optical drive. I still make CDs...
& I cannot let go of Windows.

Yeah mine has held together pretty well, strong hinges and a substantial metal frame inside the plastic. A few mostly cosmetic things have broken on it, but it's a lot more solid than the typical consumer laptop where the whole structure is just plastic.

You could always get a Macbook and install Windows on it.

I kinda want to switch to a Mac when I can spare the money. My Thinkpad is extremely heavy. I used to use Macs a lot in the 90s but haven't used OSX-era ones too much.

What do you think about the abandoning of optical drives?
Everything is going thin/lighter.
I never minded my laptop having some girth; some of these new light ones seem a little too thin.

Since I haven't bought a new laptop since 2012, I am admittedly surprised, but I guess with the whole thinner/lighter craze, I shouldn't be.
I guess I will just have to purchase an external optical.
