Laboratory set up

Hello! First post on Shroomery but I've been hiding reading on here for a year plus. First off I want to say thank you to everyone who takes part of this site, sharing knowledge with closet fungi nerds like me!
I recently acquired a friend who has a lot of money and lends to small business owners where we live to help grow their business. He's part of a group that's lended over 1.6 million dollars to small businesses @ 4% interest and that's all. They are helping me write out a business plan and get a gourmet grow op going out here!!
So first part of all this for me is setting up my lab. I have a 10'x20' on my property that I am going to split in half, half incubating and half lab space. I will separate them so it's not all mixed. So I have a few questions!
1. Should I have an exhaust vent or blower for the lab due to the air pressure the flow hood would create in a small room?
2. Does the lab need to be heated? I know the adjacent room being the incubating room needs to be heated for the spawn but does the lab inself need to have heat?
Thanks~ Wormfood

It all depends on what you're building. Are you building a clean room or just a lab?
With a lab build it how ever you want just turn the fan off when your working with the flow hood so it can buffer the air in the room. The flow hood its self will not mess with the room if you dont have a fan. It will just push the air around.
If you're building a clean room then yes you need a fan and a series of air filters to clean the air before it hits the HEPA filters that will cause the positive air pressure in the room. I think a clean room is overkill though.
Yes you can heat and cool the room how ever you wish.
Over all the most important thing is: -How clean and developed your work flow is -How clean you keep your room -How clean you keep your gear -How clean you are because you are the main contamination vector.
The flow hood will take care of everything else. They really are that good.

So if I'm clean, my process is clean and I keep my equipment and space clean all I need is a "lab" not a clean room with filters and such?
So you think a vent isn't needed for the room with a flow hood? If I just have a flow hood in there it wont create weird pressure? Thanks

All a flow hood essentially is, is a powerfull fan pushing air through a filter. It will just push air around the room.
Many of us hobbiests have flowhoods and I have never heard of weird air pressures caused by one in an enclosed room. Mine has been in a small enclosed room for years and I have never had an issue. In fact an enclosed room is ideal because it will clean and buffer the rooms air and the room won't have drafts. However it will work just fine without being in one.
You should also take the time and talk to your state and local government about what you want to do. They might have laws and guidelines in place.
From personal experience some sort of cooling and heating is needed to keep you comfortable. You will find that you will be spending hours in your lab working. The heat from the blower on the flow hood can make the room rather warm. Also keeping the temperature regulated in the lab helps to keep your agar plates happpy. Over all if you are comfortable in your lab. You wont be stressed and you will make less mistakes.
Personally I woudln`t install a vent to bring in outside air. I say that because I don't want the super dirty air being pulled into the room from the vent. That is just my personal preference. I use a nice space heater and a portable ac unit to regulate the temperature in the room. By all means if you want a vent install a vent. It all boils down to what you want and what works for you. I just dont like the thought of airborne trich spores that will be brought in by the vent.

Thank you! I will take your advice to heart and go from there. I have a meeting with some people to go over rules /regulations for all this but so far I'm pretty sure in my state (Washington state) I'm considered a farmer and need no permit or license to grow. If and when I become organic that's when I need to go through all that.
Again, thanks!

You're welcome. Stick around and give us updates. Hell make that part of your journal or make a post about the start of your business. That would be something pretty cool tbh.
I wish you the best and good luck.

I keep everthing that is sterile in my lab. Once they are ready to be fruited they get moved to another room or put outside.
I keep my lab at a constant 70 to 73 deg
