It's called baby steps. This guy is still trying to figure out cakes. Let's not scare him off with everything at once.
Granted greg, it is wise to have a few agar plates around in case you do want to clone your fruits. The chances of your fruits going to be something extraordinary on your first few times it's pretty slim "nowadays" but the chances are still there none the less if you need to clone it.
Cloning a piece of mushroom onto agar "should" guarantee it's genetics although I've never found a fruit worth cloning.
If you don't have the time to figure out agar at the moment there are many places on the web that sell premade agar dishes.

That'll work. Yes you can use those with spore prints made. Just don't become to reliant on always buying those because preparing your own agar is as easy as 123 if you ever get the time to figure it out. Cheaper also in the long run.

That could work. I like Pasty's Easy Agar to start with. For $20 you can make a couple dozen plates. They're re-usable and good for getting used to it.
I don't mean to scare anyone off Leviticus, but if you'll notice, many people show up, do a grow or two and give up because it stops working for them. Just trying to help.

If you get premade plates, they must be for fungal growth. They make different media to favor different microorganisms. So, look for PDA, MEA, LMEA, PDAY, etc.
But the pasty plates, man. Really is a good way to get started. I've gone through dozens and dozens of them. I only switched recently because I need the space! And there is a bit more prep involved.

lol. thats going to be the FEDS next claim. 'kids.. if you eat shrooms.. you'll get a cleft lip.. and kill your friends.'
OP i stopped reading this thread when you mentioned 'grow kit'. you got these results because grow kits give horrible results. like jars stalling.
make your own freakin jars. if your thinking(which i can relate).. 'oh i got a grow kit cause i wanted to be sure it will work apposed to myself making the substrate... i dont wanna ruin it!!?' you need to re-read everything. like over and over again.
if you dont like failure as you said, why did you pick a 99% failure rate approach?

Hey Mr Judgemmental. Maybe you should read the rest of the thread but being you're quick to jump, I'll reiterate.
About 7-8 months ago, I decided I wanted to give this all a try. I knew nothing and when I googled the grow kit popped up. I figured this would be a great way to go as I read reviews and people had good results with it. So at the time, how would I have known it's junk??
While I have probably yielded a total of 3+ ounces since, let's fast forward. Started getting more involved in these forums and REALIZED I was doing it all wrong. If you continued to read you would have seen I redid everything and do make my own jars with a PC. You would see I made a sgfc. You would see I don't use the dumb kits humidifier and air pump and heating pad.
I'm trying to perfect this as I'm an intelligent perfectionist with an insane fear of failure. Thanks to everyone else who instead of judging and acting like I'm a moron, gave me some awesome wisdom so I could start doing it right. Must be awesome to have neve failed. Thanks for the input though.

Yeah, you can plop it in the Oven for awhile, but why when fresh perlite costs like 4 bucks a bag or less?

Also, if you're new and your posts contain the words: Humidifer, incubator, air-stone, or heater, then you need to read and UTFSE before asking people to review your setup. OR... You should be cultivating reptiles and fish, not mushrooms.

If there's a dry verm layer, I wouldn't put anything at all over the holes, with the exception of foil while sterilizing. It seems like it restricts GE too much.

why TF would you replace your perlite, exactly? You can rinse it off, guys. Use 10%store bought bleach 90% tap water if you want to.
Unless it's the MG stuff, it turns green for some reason (algae?). If that's what you got, fuck that shit.

perlite is dirt cheap. so rinsing it off after use is too much work. i work hard in life for the ability to discard perlite.
