I live in Southeast Michigan and Ive looked on the lawns, parks and natures around where I live but to no avail. I know I've seen these growing as a kid before I knew they were safe (I was told they were poisonous) but now I cant seem to find them anymore.

I generally find these growing near conifers with wide open space below them. Generally lightly wooded trails, along the edge of a park, driveways and roadsides.

Just keep searching man, that's part of hunting, you might see perfect habitat for the genus/species you're targeting, but nothing growing there, happens all the time.

This isn't DNM, nobody is selling anything.

stevo said: I usually will take about a 10 mile ride and see a half dozen patches and now that my eyes are tuned in I start seeing them everywhere on the edge of piney woods. What I'm saying here is don't look too hard. Think of it like an easter egg hunt.
I usually take one of my bikes out to hunt, carry bag with appropriate hunting stuff (cam, mesh collection bags, knife, etc), it's nice riding and hunting, and I live close enough to some large parks where I can take my bike and chain it up and hike for a few hours.
Feels good cycling then hunting.
Also I wanted to add that some places that produce one species of Amanita, will produce other species later in the year, so I might have a spot that produces Amanita amerirubescens through summer, then later in the fall produce something else, so keep checking areas you see other large Amanita species fruiting in.

Not to make you jealous, but these are right at the end of my driveway. Note the pins in the photo as well. These may be all you can see if a patch is young.
