Grey Contaminant
    #23696929 - 10/01/16 11:29 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Out of about 12 jars I've done with this batch of grain so far, I've ran up against one noticeable contamination.  It looks like it's grey, and almost identical to the mushroom mycelium except the color and the way it presses against the glass.  It is not spreading, and seems somewhat isolated by the surrounding walls of Myc.  My guess was bacteria of some type, but what kind is unknown to me.

Can anybody identify?  And what do you think I should do with this jar?  Straight cased grain tray or fruit right in the jar?

Kinda looks like black mold to me. Somene with a lil more experience with contams may be able to correct me, but either way, those jars are fucked. Even if the mycelium covers it, it'll kill your yield. In my opinion, toss it.

If it isn't mold, there is no harm in fruiting right in the jar.  That's my purpose in identifying here.

It is only the single jar also, most of the other jars have either already been spawned, are fully colonized, or on their way to be.

If it's a matter of just bacteria then it'll likely just be cased and allowed to fruit in the jar.

In my experience, bacteria rarely turns black, it usually causes yellowing from metabolites. I've been wrong before tho, so just keep an eye on it. If you get fruits, they will be safe to eat as long as no mold is on the actual fruit.

If you are dead set on fruiting it get it as far away from your operation as possible before opening and fruiting.  You don't wanna spread that shit around your "spawn lab" needlessly.

I can fruit in its own small chamber rather easily, away from my cleaner projects.  If it is bacterial there literally is no risk in fruiting it this way, that part isn't the big deal to me.  If it can produce a flush or two in the jar itself, that's great.  I don't expect much out of it.

Mold is a different story for me however.

I just wanted to rule out whether or not it actually is in fact mold, if not, that's great.  If so, I probably will put it to better uses outside in a compost bed.

My money is on mold, but I'm anxious to see everybody else's opinion.

Mushierage sorry but i also think that it is mold. I have never seen a bacterial contamination like this.
