The name on a syringe of cubensis does not suddenly make it like wood more than other cubensis...  This doesn't sound like a good idea at all.

Yup, a cube is a cube. A dung loving species won't have a strain that suddenly changes its appetite ^_^.

For cubensis it is.

Pf cakes shrink to less than half their original size, more than just compaction, you can weigh them after a few flushes and see that they derived something from the vermiculite if you account for your mass of h2o and brf

Also wet vermiculite molds up no problem. Plenty of molds will do just fine on vermiculite and moisture alone

Don't forget theirs some fungi that lives off just limestone.

When you think about fungi the plant and animal ideas don't hold up so to say vermiculite is non nutritional doesn't come from a mycology perspective

Not quite, the limestone, calcium carbonate (CaCO3), contains carbons, required for basic energy for mycelium.
Vermiculite is void of carbon, the only useful nutrients are hydrogen and oxygen.

Glycogen is composed of C-H-O. Its down to ability to digest C-H-O sources.
Based on species, genetics. Wood beats vermiculite.

See my data here: Carbon and energy sources.

Cubensis won't break down lignin and cellulose. Nutrition depends on if the organism can use it. While vermiculite isn't a complete source its at least available to cubensis metabolism.

While there's other things in wood cubes can eat, the excess is unnecessary contamination magnet with this species. With a wood loving fungi absolutely wood is more nutritional than vermiculite... Duh

People have grown cubes with vermiculite substituted for sawdust, paper pulp, and other wood based things all the time. More than a few times a year a thread pops up someone can't find vermiculite or just said fuck it and used what they had.

Wood based substitute PF cakes do terrible with cubensis on them. Best case scenario I've seen are ones with half decent flushes

You could ask cronicr about it he's done wood in cakes with wood lovers and cubes.
And even for wood lovers he seems to prefer verm anyway

no wood in a casing will trich out, thats trichs favorite food, you certainly can use sawdust and woodchips for a cake i've done it but results were alot weaker, i'd suggest what kizzle said and go grains to bulk

woodlover species even still do better with verm:crazy:

Paper pellets don't mold easily, there's no wood resins. Cubensis obviously doesn't like the resins.
You can grow cubensis in compost, and there isn't much if any starch in compost.

You can also grow on straw, which has lots of plant fiber.
I think you will find the wood resins are the issue.

A wood lover would breakdown the resins.

I can grow open air with paper.
Even enriched paper.

Ok well come back when you grow cubes on paper or wood products and make it look decent

Cubes don't do well on paper(or books)
Cubes don't do well at all on compost though they can grow on it. They're primary and secondary decomposers technically but they are primarily primary decomposers.

The addition of paper or wood actually seems to hinder performance. As if it's not even getting all it can out of the flour(brf) in a cake

Yup, thats why I requested a test run from anyone willing here.
This is the last step for me, last bit of needed data.

Later on I'll try digging up all the existing cakes with substitute vermiculite for wood/paper including pictures.
