hey guys. ive been away from the shroomery for awhile now do to a hectic lifestyle, but have been actively cultivating. I have been currently trying to pass around ideas on a better way to wash / rinse bulk rye berries. currently i am using 5 gallon buckets and rinsing and dumping and filling over and over till clean. depending on where the rye comes from, some is way dirtier than others. not only dirt but other contaminants such as plant matter and seeds and shit. its very time consuming. I need a better way to rinse 50 pounds of berries or even more if need be. yes i need that much. filling 12 buckets suuuux! anybody an engineer or work on a mushy farm that can throw some ideas my way would be greatly appreciated.
ive thought of screens maybe in a rotating cylinder with shower sprinkler or something. maybe an agitator of some sort. fuck i dont know.

You could use a washing machine with a modified drum (small enough that rye berries wont go through). Water only of course. It should work The problem is if the dirt is bigger than the berries you can not remove it automatically without high tech gear.
//edit
There a different brands in my country. Some sell perfect clean rye berries that I dont have to rinse anymore. Of course they are a little more expensive.

55 gallon barrel with a spigot/manifold on the bottom would work well. For the manifold look up a DIY lauter tun used in beer brewing. I find food grade plastic 55 gallon barrels on CL all the time.

I have a farmer friend that welded a crank to a washing machine drum to use as a giant lettuce spinner. They have a sprayer end on a hose they use for the wash water.
A similar thing would work very well for grains IMO, as long as the holes aren't too big.

i think screening in a old washing machine might work but i would have to pick the screen carefully. when rinsing in my sink i have a screen strainer in the drain but it gets clogged the first rinse due to too much shit in with the berries. i get my rye from local grain supplier like a feed mill. but they get it from different sources. sometimes the rye will be super clean then sometimes it will be super dirty, like what i got right now. i dont use organic rye berries you would find from like whole foods and shit because the price is like $60+ for an 50 LB bag. its only like $26 for 56LB bag at the mill. I know this because i use the organic rye for some of my moonshine recipes
i tried just letting the bucket over flow constantly and aggitating the rye so the trash would float and be forced over the wall but it didnt do the job well ebough

how is a washing machine a popular idea haha? honestly a food grade barrel with the spigot/manifold has got to be the easiest/cheapest method of cleaning large amounts of berries. collect the rinse water to water plants with. full of good stuff.

Who said it was a popular idea?
I'm sure either way would work anyway...

Just the drum of a washing machine, not the whole thing.

ive put together 55 gallon double drum as per demonstrated in RR's webpage and similar variants. that can also be used as a single drum. with shelves.

Could always just not rinse them. if they're sticky and shit, don't cook them so much. Sticks and shit never harmed anything for me xD

Something like this: http://www.harborfreight.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/i/m/image_18138.jpg
Please don't recommend harbor freight junk tools. That is counter productive. Besides, even a name brand tool like you mentioned would mash grains... https://www.williamsbrewing.com/mobile/BOILERMAKER-G2-55-GALLON-BREWING-POT-P2070.aspx

I realize this is counter to OP but...

I figure anything else that comes with the rye berries is either mushroom food, therefore should be left in, or is inert once sterile therefore who cares if it is left in. Unless you are eating your spawn or something, why is random debris/dirt even a problem?
Edit: as a real answer to OP's problem: You need to think bigger! I'm thinking...55 gal drums, probably two minimum, and maybe take the mosquito netting out of a few windows to use as a giant wash screen. Put it up on a frame (55 gal cut in half?), put rye on it, and hose the whole thing down. Then dump into 55 gal drum to hydrate overnight.

It's the first picture I found on google images. Yeah, harbor freight is shit. I wasn't aware that it would mash grains honestly.
I personally don't rinse my rye berries anyway, so who am I to give advice.
