hugelkultur with mushrooms
    #23694466 - 09/30/16 04:02 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I've been researching hugelkultur lately and had the idea of innoculating the logs on the end of the bed with some gourmets. Since the beds have excellent water retention, it should keep the inoculated logs nicely moist. Also, any rain will run off into the end logs. Once the log is spent, just put another log down and expand the hugelkultur bed.

I think it would work, and I will try it next summer. Just seeing if anyone has done it, or have any ideas to add. Thanks!

you dont want exposed logs in a hugelkultur, this aids in the bed drying out. all of the logs should be covered with a foot of soil or more for best results. ive built dozens of hugel beds some a hundred ft or more and some 5-6 ft tall. its best to inoculate the thick mulch layer that goes on top, the mycelium will find its way to the inner logs over time and use it as a storage for moisture and nutrients. Stropharia rugosoannulata has been my go to in these situations.

hope that helps

Ahhhh makes sense, thanks! Underground moisture storage is ingenious. How thick is your mulch layer? I've only seen my friend's hugelkultur bed and he didn't use mulch, maybe just skimping on it.
