Grain Jar Lid Preperation
    #23694404 - 09/30/16 03:43 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

For all of my WBS grain jars i have been using jar lids that simply have a 1/4" hole drilled in the top and a clump of polyfill fed through the hole. Using this method i typically have a 25% contamination rate with my jars (give or take,i recently had 10 jars contaminate:eek::syringe::rolleyes:) so today i decided to construct new lids using ideas from other TEKs and items i could find in my area to hopefully lower my contamination rate. I will be showing everything i did to make the jars and maybe i can get some opinions from the community to get an idea if i am going in the right direction.

Items Used:
Painter's Coveralls (bought from Walmart)

Wide Mouth Quart Jars

Clear Weatherproof Silicone

1/4" Drill Bit (using a wide screwdriver to punch a hole out works aswell)

Construction:
To begin i took the quart jar (with the lid and band on, rubber side down)and proceeded to drill two 1/4" holes on the lid.

After drilling the two holes, i applied the silicone to the hole closest to the edge.

After applying the silicone, i cut a small square of the painters coveralls. With the small square of fabric i carefully folded it in half, placed it over the hole in the center, and applied silicone gel around all the edges.

Once the silicone is applied to the fabric the jar is complete!

Hopefully these lids will greatly reduce my contamination rate (i guess ill know in the next 1-2 weeks :crazy2:)and any feedback would be greatly appreciated so i can better my technique and possibly provide helpful information to those interested in the art of growing with grains

A TEK like this one has been already posted some times. It should work.

Sweet! my biggest concern was using the painters coveralls as i really haven't seen very many people using it as a filter, tyvek is a little hard to find around here ( and i prefer not to use filters made from mailing envelopes). so i figured hey if i post a detailed "guide" i could get feedback on anything im doing wrong/right with my jars and it never hurts to add step by step instructions with pictures because i remember when i first started lurking around the forums i always have to look at multiple guides of the same tek as each person might have useful bits of information that another guide might skip over or simply not use.

If the painters coveralls are not made of tyvek you could get problems.
Micropore Tape is an option (not perfect but it works for a lot of people).

The problem is you don't know the material of your filter. It has to block bad spores that are about 2-3 microns big. You can try it with your lids but don't be disappointed if you get contams. This hobby can get expensive if you use nice equipment but it is worth it. A cheap and good filter material is polyfill.

if it comes to it ill start ordering nicer materials online but if this goes smoothly i will be very content ^_^. honestly though, contaminations can be more expensive than nice equipment from what Ive learned so far

That's it. As I wrote you could make some more lids with polyfill. It is cheap and has been proven to be efficient.
It is possible that your filter material is good. It is also possible that it is far too porous.
There is a lot trial and error in this hobby. I am working on new TEKs right now that need a lot of tests before I want to publish them.

Why not just double or triple layer of micropire tape?

Did you try looking up the cover alls online and reading the description? Might say what materials it made of if the package doesn't.  Just a thought

Well i did some googling and the coveralls are made of polypropylene, though i could not find any information on the size of the materials pores, so i guess i just hope they are small enough to act as a filter lol?

The:thumbdown: says all that needs to be said lol i wouldn't try and reinvent the wheel when it isn't broke.  If you loook at myco bags that are made of poly, which many are, they include filter patches. This would lead me to believe that the breathability or some other characteristic of it wouldn't make it great for a gas exchange filter.

Well out of 7 jars 3 are almost fully colonized so seems the coveralls were a success.

not saying urs will melt(obviously, they already lasted a cycle or 2), but keep an eye on them for warping over time
