Is it wrong to not want a career? 3

I look at people trying to climb corporate ladders and to be honest I pity them. I so never want want to do that. , I was a lucky one. I got out of college and immediately got a job for the government, all the benefits, close to 50k a year entry-level and flexible hours. People from my class were still working minimum salary envying me... Then after 9 months I said fuck it, I'm leaving this potential 120k job in 5 to years, garanteed, government protected, unionize with a schedule pay increase way higher than any private corporation offers while doing half the work and having twice as many breaks.
My family lost their shit, my friends too. I was crazy. I had officially lost it. WTF is wrong with you???????
They finally got over it and said it was a stupid youth mistake you would regret and then eventually they said that I would grow up and want it again and realize my mistake. Fast forward 10 years. Still don't regret a thing, I still have absolutely no intention of having a career or a full time job. I did put the cash I made from the gov to good use.
So yeah. WTF is wrong with me? Did I turn down what everybody my age wanted because I'm a moron? Was I wrong?
Do you want a career?

You can either climb the corporate ladder for 40yrs+ and die accomplishing a lot for other people, or you can work your ass off on your own terms, make way more money, set your own hours, and live a happy life.
You made the right choice IME. I used to work for Symantec and quit within a month because I couldn't see a future for myself there.

I only care about $$$$.
If I can make enough money without a career to live comfortably, buy nice things from time to time, and purchase drugs then I'm content.
I don't ever plan to have kids so I'll spend all my $$$ on myself.

I want a career, and have a career. It's a really meaningful one, that has rewards beyond the financial ones. That's something I needed in my life. Took me a while to figure that out & find the right path, but I did & it's making me happy.
Moonrock working in a trade is still a career if that's what you're doing with your life.

Career is a pretty broad term. Do you not do anything for money on a regular basis?

Well I already have a career but I sometimes wish I could make money without one. But then I wake up and realize everyone has to have a job.
Right now I'm a quality engineer and there's no way in hell I'd want to get promoted to an engineering manager. I can already barely handle the stress. I'm honestly thinking about switching paths and going back into automation and programming which I think I was better at and definitely enjoy more. Quality is just where I got my first job out of college.

Yeah quality has got to kind of suck. Either you got to be a PITA to everyone or not do your job properly.

It fucking sucks ass. Especially when we are making seatbelt buckles and gas pedals but it's a small family owned company that doesn't know shit about error proofing or put any controls in place at all really. God i hate it I need to get out of here. I need to become a slum lord.

Yeah I have similar issues doing machine tech stuff at a small shop who has not done much maintenance and doesn't really want to invest what they should to catch up, but at least I like the work I get to do, and sometimes it can be fun an satisfying coming up with creative solutions to problems.
Everyone's like "oh I get to dick around at work and my hours are flexible" but that just doesn't work for me. I need work to do, and I need to be expected to show up and do it otherwise I wont. I'm far to crazy to not work. I would just drink myself to death or something otherwise.

Why overthink this stuff, dude?
You pay your bills, yes? You are happy or at least relatively so/not anything that becoming a workaholic would solve?
I want a career, but it has to mean something to me. And hey, I'm 24, at this point, I feel like I'm on the right track and one day maybe I'll be lucky to work for myself or own a business on the side, as I'd love to - but having a meaningful career matters to me and the fact that it matters to me personally is what counts and that alone.
If you are meeting your needs without being on the 9-5 traditional grind, then you're good dude, anyone who'd criticize you is just assuming everything wants the same things they do in this world and that's so far from the truth it hurts.

I managed to start a pretty cool and profitable business in a growing city without using loans. It took a lot of luck, sucking up to the right people, and going semi-homeless during the expensive start up, and I sold weed for 3 years and worked part time in my field before to save up for the initial investment.
Not saying just to brag, but that you can really do what you want if you sacrifice a bit (and also get lucky choosing the right thing to do.)
