First time grower - small scales on cake - possible contam?

Hello! This is my first time growing and I'm embarrassed to say I'm using a kit. I bought it without doing any research and then discovered this amazing resource. Needless to say, I will be using the teks for future grows.
In the meantime, I'm in the middle of my first flush and two of my 18 cakes appear to have some kind of scale growing on the side. Possibly unrelated, some of the stalks feel almost hollow, or have become kind of collapsed. Do I have a contaminant?

What kind of fruiting chamber is that? Also, hollow stems happen, I personally don't think it's a big deal, but some others might. I'd say the stalk appears collapsed because it is hollow. Welcome to the shroomery.

It's a PMP from midwest grow kits. I have been reading a lot on the forums and know for the future the best thing will be to use a SGFC.
Thanks for the welcome and the stalk information! Any idea about the little scales?

I'm not 100% sure about the scales? I think I see what you are talking about and a cause could be from not enough fae. Mycelium needs oxygen like us and when there is an insufficient amount, it reaches out to find more. Does the Pmp have any holes at the top of the lid?

If you can just buy another tub and make it into a sgfc you'll be golden. I made the same kit mistake, is definatly not able to provide enough fae for your cakes. Pmp's are pretty much a thing of the past and that's one of the reasons. Good luck! Also look into the dunk and roll method for your brf cakes.
