I usually pour boiling water on the block to make it expand and to try kill some potential fungus in there. Something i used to do in the mushroom growing days when using coco. But then i use it straight away as soon it has cooled off.
I never wash it. Is it something i should be doing.? The ones i buy says its been washed.

Are you using coco bricks, Ferrel? It's said that the bricks contain salts that need to be washed out before use. But if it explicitly mentions it's been washed beforehand, I wouldn't worry about it. Fungi probably are less sensitive to salts in their growth medium.

If it says its been washed its fine. I just learned about using it from some online pot growers wayyy back in the day and they all advised washing it. I dont remember hearing of anything that has been prewashed back then, so i never really check. The brick i have doesnt specify. Or maybe it does and im still just mot trained to look but yeah if it says prewashed, i would prob just soak in water to help break it up and get it fluffy. Honestly i never even knew that it was available in a prewashed form until just now
That would explain why the ppl at the hydrostore slways say to just wet it to fluff it up and always act surprised when i asked how long they advise doing the salt rinse and soak maybe enough frustrated gardens bitched and wined and petitioned to the hydro companies and demanded they do the freaking rinse beforehand sounds intense but i could totally see such a thing going on. For as much as i love using coco, i hate doing the soaks

I use a lot of coco in soil mixes. Never heard of anyone advising to wash it. I let it soak overnight, break it up, then pass it trough 1/4" screen to break it up. Gets it very nice and fluffy.

I love me some coco coir. Expanding the bricks and breaking it up feels good on the hands.
I took about 30 cuttings today. I'll probably take 60 more tomorow. I'm trying to get the bushy stumps to grow more like a tree by pruning everything except one shoot.

Moon_unit said: Thanks Mateo the seedlings didn't appear too bothered untill the last couple if days, I've now noticed the leave's are curling and crappy looking. I'll get some h2o2 today as you suggested and treat them, what's the dilution rate bro? Is it good for foliage spray or do I just spray or drench the soil? Man I hope they make it, it would suck if I lost em,
Didn´t see your post erlier, sorry. Be careful with H2O2, I used a 1% H2O2 solution. Many of my small seedlings did not make it. But i think it wasn´t the H2O2 but the original dampening off/fungus or whatever it is causing the seedlings to get these brown/grayish leaf color. Many mini seedlings died but the ones who make it did a remarkable recovery after the H2O2 treatment. I sprayed seedlings but also much on the soil so it seeped down into it, killing the fungus things. It fizzed and looked like a mini earthquake in the soil/pot, H2O2 always fizzes like this, even weak solutions. They say stronger H2O2 solutions than 1% can be used without ill effects but with small seedlings one should be little careful. I hope it goes well for you.

Anyone else get mealy bugs on their kratoms? Out of all the plants I grow caapi, kratom, and novos get bugs. Mealy bugs on kratom, aphids on novos and caapis. Every year they show up late spring to prey on my plants. I look at my plants daily so I catch it quick and kill them. I hate them.

Mine show up early spring wvery year as they come out of dormancy. Always aphids. They are on everything. My citrus trees get it bad as well.

At least aphids isn´t killing the plants.
The spidermites are much more evil, these are the worst i had to deal with so far. They killed 3 E.novo plants for me recently. Big ones, like over 1 meter tall plants. I hate them, and even the strong stuff seem hardly effective.
But i dont grow outdoors all year around for most plants, maybe then things are different.

I typically don’t have bugs on my kratom plants once I put them outside for the summer. They get infested with spider mites during the winter, but they go away once outside. Sometimes I’ll see some aphids during the summer, usually at the top of the plant. It seems to start at one spot on one tree and then spread. I’ll spray it with some neem or insecticidal soap which takes care of it. I think I have enough predatory insects to keep things in balance for the most part.
My kratom plants are just now waking up from the winter. I believe I actually lost a few last winter. I opened the vents in the basement where they spent the winter, which made it a little warmer and drier. I believe the warmth also favored the spider mites. It was so crowded that I couldn’t walk around, and they got neglected. I saw that my plants were weeping fluid, I’m guessing that was from the spider mite damage. Next winter they will be in my garage, hopefully the cold will keep the bug population down. I’ve overwintering a Bumble Bee like that before, so I know they can handle it.
I’m surprised to read that people have bugs on their E novos. I have NEVER seen any bugs on mine, even when they are sitting next to a several spider mite infested kratom. Same goes with my khat.
I hate to say it, but I’m losing that loving feeling for growing kratom. I can’t put them in the ground and I’m limited by 8 foot ceilings. The excitement went away once I didn’t need them to get any bigger. I’ll make a bunch of cuttings in about a month, but other than that I won’t need to do much with them this summer.

Dude Jizz i could how you could say that, only because you have gone so freaking hard w it up until now. Seriously man, maybe you have conquered as much as you can for the time being. Rediscover the magic in another species of plant perhaps. Its pretty easy to find a new favorite sometimes
you did the dew jizz, maybe just focus on preserving your riches of trees for the day you could drop into soil or something. I know the pains of the container life dude, it sucks on some level. But we got what we got out there bro. Perhaps youll rediscover your magic for kratom once the season really hits hard and start blowing the fuck up again. Maybe venture into guerilla trees or starting a new strain from seed?
Much love dude, keep growing

There is allways a new, rare variety one can try hunt down. Like horned varietys, elephant variety or super kratom. Or the relatives, Hirsuata and others.
Its like with the cacti, when ordinary Lophs, Trichos seem boring one starts to look for grafted, crests, mutated and varigated specimens. Maybe even try to create some of these mutated freaks oneself.
Imagine to sucessfully create a triploid mitragyna plant. Instead of two leafs at every node there will be 3, that will increase yield a lot and cuttings and clones will be highly attractive to trade with.
So much one can do within this hobby, the sky (or the 8-foot cieling) isnt the limit.

Yeah container growing is so limiting. in Texas where im from, not everything can go in the geound. Even when it can my wife doesnt like it.
Gardening is a hobby with endless possibilties. Im sure youll bounce back and in love with something els,in no time.

The space I save by thinning my kratom will be replaced with my growing novo and khat plants. They are my new favorites because they provide something I can’t really buy and they both look good Year around. But I’ll always have some kratom, and hopefully one day a house with really tall ceilings, HaHa!
