Wonder why ellomello... What size pot did you have it in? Sometimes I wonder whether or not I should have the base of the pot off of the ground for air circulation and to help with drainage. I don't normally get as concerned with clay pots, but plastic has me wondering at times.

I've never elevated mine and I keep them in 30+ gallon buckets before they go in the ground. Soil that drains but also retains water is what you want if you are growing in pots. It's hard to over water a Kratom. I have not grown Kratom in clay pots and probably never will due to how much theyou drink and unglazed clay pots drying out faster. Great for cactus though!

Micaele said: Six days ago (Mon 4/9-17) I planted 12 pots with mitragyna seeds. 9 with Rifat and 3 with RVT. In each pot, I put between 7-10 seeds into soil. This is the second time I try to germinate mitragyna seeds and after getting some critique on my soil, I went with something called "Seedling soil", I'm not sure if it's called that in other countries. It's basically a fine meshed soil with low nutritional value and a bit of fine grained sand blended into it. The soil I used the first time was "urn soil" (perhaps graveyard soil?) which is very rough and jagged but has a high nutritional content. However.. Today, I noticed that 11 of the seeds has started to sprout, all of which are from the Rifat strain.
This is a much better result than I got from the first time around, where I planted more than double the amount of seeds and managed to get a total of 4 seeds to sprout.
I do seem to have a problem with my biggest plant. It seems to have a few leaf scorches which has came about in the past 2 days.
I'm not feeling super optimistic about these scorches and was wondering if anyone had any idea what may have caused it. I've done some Googling around and it seems that drench, sunlight/heat or too much nutrients could be the problem. I've heard that Mitragyna can handle a lot of wetness, but I've stopped misting it as much in order to see if that's what caused it. I've stopped the lamp from running 24/7, because I guess tiny Mitragynas in the natural environment are often surrounded by larger trees and perhaps they can't handle too much light. Also, the lamp was giving off some heat.
Id ease up on the humidity. You gotta loghten up the soil. Mine has those same splotches youre talking about. But just on the new growth. I also feel the ants have been harvesting those little assholes that eat the leaves. Anywho, mine are outside and nature just balances itselft out.

I plan to locate one of those 55gal plastic food grade drums and cut in half. I think that ought to be plenty of room once it outgrows this 5 gal container I have it in now. Pinedown, I will take your advice and not put it in clay. You're right, they do love water.

I took a dozen cuttings from my seed-grown rifats today, here's the leaf I was able to harvest from that.

Only weighed-in at 20.5g fresh, so I'm guessing it will be around 2-4g dry. It really puts things into perspective, pretty crazy to think about when you eat at least 5 times this much leaf a day...

Yeah, I've found that the average leaf from a decent size tree dries out to be about half a gram. So a five gram dose is about ten leaves and a kilo is about two thousand leaves. As all of our plants grow bigger, we need to come up with a way of efficiently dealing with all of those leaves.

Dealing with a large harvest isn't too much of a problem:
Havest leaf by crumpling them as you pick and place into paper grocery bags.
Let dry inside while rotating the leaves in the bags.
Pour into a large cardboard box for final drying and ease of rotation.
Crush to stored in a compressed form.
Powder as necessary.

I just got about pound off a couple trees and it's no where near picked bare. It's easy as naum said. I dry them in a room with a dehumidifier going to speed things up but it's unnecessary. They crush really easily and the stems cone right out if you sift. Just found some PVI clones that are localish so that's another one off the list. Can't wait for these to flower and start pollinating hopefully next year.

My little plant opened up two new leafs today. I followed your advice, Ferrel_human and reduced the misting to once a day. The scorches hasn't grown larger since.

whooooops... I looked but somehow missed this thread and started one of my own.
Maybe I should ask a mod how to delete it and just post my stuff over here?

Hi Mostly Harmless I just tried to delete it without any success... Here is that I wanted to share with this community. Please delete my thread. Thank you PsiloPsychIn
******************************************
I'm glad I found this thread... I almost started my own because I could not find a similar thread but as soon as I posted these photos (below) I found this thread. So I moved my stuff over here. Thanks for having me =)
I enjoy ingesting Kratom as many do. I'm not a heavy user but I am a regular user. My affection for the drug and my general interest in growing exotic plants had me hunting down a Mitragyna Speciosa cutting and this past spring I was fortunate in finding a source. Here is some basic information on the plant and its human use: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitragyna_speciosa
For me growing this plant is mostly just a novelty ... I like to watch it grow and I get a different kind of satisfaction out of it than say my orchids or begonias because I know in principle at least that it produces a suite of chemicals that I really enjoy having on board in my body. Then again if I were to harvest some leaves and get that wonderful Kratom feeling from my own plant... that would be pretty cool!
I am hoping that in this thread I will learn from others and maybe when my noob status gets worn out enough.. I could offer some helpful advise to newly minted Mitragyna Speciosa growers.
I'll start with my cutting - I was told it is a Rifat - a red vein variety originally collected in Thailand and one of the more common cultivars that are available.
I got the cutting when it was quite small in about June of 2017 as you can see it had just two pairs of leaves and a rather small root ball:

I put it into a 3 gallon "smart pot" filled with Fox Farm Ocean Forest potting soil. I first put in about 1/2 inch perlite at the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage because I heard that they like that. I did not fertilize until just recently (starting in September) and I'm just using BioThrive "Grow" because that is what I have handy for my cannabis.

The plant has had steady growth producing one new pair of leaves about every two weeks. Each new set is larger than the last. I water every few days allowing the soil to become slightly dry each time.
Fast forward to this week (second week of September) and I'm happy to report two exciting new developments. First, about half way up the stem a new leaf pushed out at the base of an older leaf... essentially starting a new growth point off the main stem.

Second... Then! when the newest pair of leaves started forming something different was happening - sure enough inside the new pair of leaves was two smaller pairs of leaves.... starting a fork in the main stem and producing a total of 6 leaves in this budding event! I'm really excited.

Overall it is showing a robust growth pattern. I'm a bit concerned about how it will manage the very low humidity in my home once the winter comes and the heat is on 24-7.

I'm looking forward to posting more in here.... thanks for having me folks! PsiloPsychIn

My mitragyna speciosa seed grown plant :
It spent one summer outside. I did terrible because I left it in full sun in my dry and hot summer. Leaves went red and crispy. I corrected one month ago or something like that and it grew back.

Once acclimated, these plants are easy and forgiving. But if you give them what they like, they grow crazy fast. My plant is not growing fast, leaves aren't big enough but it's slowly acclimating to the way I grow thing, which is cool.
My plant is doing some strange stuff, putting out a crazy amount of branching at the base.

Next summer I'll try to make some cuttings to propagate and try putting one in the ground outdoors in a sheltered position with a fair amount of protection for winter. If it grows back in spring I'll be so amazed
About waterings and soil. My thoughts are that these plants can be fully wet all the time as long as you have good drainage and ventilation. (Like pretty much all the fast growing plants.) Drainage, ventilation, sunlight and tons of organics/water is the real shit.)

PsiloPsychIn: Welcome to the EG, PsiloPsychIn. Thanks for sharing Your plant looks great.
Argyreia: Beautiful seed grown clone. Some of the longer leaves I've seen on a clone. They love water and don't even need great drainage if in ground. They do very well in heavy clay.
mrmazdarx9: Amazing looking.
