That is an interesting and important part of the story for sure, but not necessarily the same matter as variety names being actually descriptive. Whether potency is mostly due to conditions or not is another question than whether appearance esp of leaf vein colors is mostly to do with conditions/whether the genetics contribute a significant part to that. Many plants (in general) can turn purple under particular conditions but not all do so under some "average" / natural conditions..
(But yea i hear where you're coming from with effects profiles being associated with varieties and esp leaf vein colors but I have already abandoned that a while ago... those widespread beliefs don't seem credible to me anymore no. I was just wondering whether these sorts of myths basically apply just about the same to the purely botanical matter of variety names and phenotypes. Of course it's quite possible they do and just point towards the same issue of variations in traits being attributed to varieties esp when it boosts marketing, and never really crediting it to growing conditions. Maybe kinda like exploited superstition and perhaps not unlike many Cubensis varieties although those variety names tend to be more about collecting locations rather than description, yet you do see effect profiles on online smartshops i think.)

Poison Drink said: My kratom plants look terrible and I'm unsure if this is considered normal during wintertime. I have only been growing these plants since last spring. I recently gave them a repot because I figured they were getting rootbound, so they shouldn't be lacking any nutrients at the moment.
They're straight under a 250W HPS light, which might be too much for them? The room is without heating so it gets coldish in there when the light is off. Other ethnobotanical plants in this room don't seem to mind though. Also I guess humidity is rather low indoors at this time.
Is there anything I can do to make them prosper again? The leaves get brown spots and tears because they seem rather dry. Most of the leaves have fallen off. The plant pictured is still growing sluggishly, the other one is just a stick without leaves. I don't think they're affected by any pests at the moment either. Even the other previously leafless stick is growing side shoots!

This was about a month ago. I put my two Kratom plants in a transparent plastic bag and placed them a bit further away from the grow light. The old leaves have fallen off and new shoots are emerging.

I do have spider mites. Bad. I think.
Any tips on treatment? I've read dawn/water misting and wipe down the backside and front of leaves.
Neem oil?
I'm super exhausted or I would have had pictures.

Mmmkayyy fellers. I sprayed all my trees down backside and front with dawn/water until it was dripping off
Letting it dry then I'll turn the lights back on?
I'll wipe the leaves and trunk down with a soft cloth dampened with dawn/water tommarrow morning.
I did find a spider and his webb but I doubt that's what's making the webs im stressing. I saw distinct red tiny tick looking bugs in said Webb's.
I moved the spider before spraying.
Hopefully this will work. If not I have neem and some pepper garlic spray that worked on aphids.
Always wanted lady bugs so maybe i should use this excuse to order thousands.
Thanks for the advice Pinedown!

You could use Amblyseius swirskii. They're a predatory mite, and they control whitefly and thrips on top of spider mites.
I recently ordered a bunch for whitefly. Took a couple weeks for them to get the whitefly problem under control, but it has worked well and kept the whitefly from spreading to any other plants. Once under control I just removed the plant material that was infested and it seemingly cleared up after that. They will also establish themselves after the pests are gone if you have a presence of mold or pollen in your grow space (which I think most will at least in some amount).

Sounds like Red Spider Mites.
Applying neem will knock the population down, you'll need to re apply every few days for a couple/few weeks to control them.
Just found out what 'dawn' is. A soap. Will do something but neem might work better.

A day or two ago, I used Phytoseiulus persimilis predatory mites to try and combat my spider mite problem. They arrived in fine vermiculite as carrier material, in a glass tube. I divided it over two dozen coffee filters and hung these in my plants. It was rather spectacular to see the small army of predatory mites leave the filters, ready to hunt. I'm hoping they'll eradicate the spider mites! I had a good experience in solving a fungus gnats problem by using predatory nematodes, so I have high expectations.

Hey snakeye, google Azadirachtin.
It's a neem extract that's super effective against mites.
I've used it on a weekly rotation to eliminate mites in cannabis.
It's organic, if that matters.

Hey Guys, zone 8b here, top of Florida. I read that kratom is Hardy to USDA zone 9. I'm wondering if I could pot up a tree for several years, then plant it in ground? We have a ground surface freeze maybe once every 10 years .

Yeah it should survive so long as you protect it with frost cloth when yall have any hard freezes. A well established tree could probably tolerate light freezes easily enough.

I'm around 30 miles from the Gulf. Due to my microclimate, it's more like zone 9. I figure what the heck. I'll try one on the south side up close to the house. I have full southern exposure so it may work.Moringa and bananas have no trouble in my neighborhood. I think it's due to the huge volume of freshwater springs immediately to our north.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. Really intrested in these "good" bugs!
Finally got around to wiping everyone down today. Lost a few leaves but got all the webbs, dust, and hopefully the mites too. Pondering on neem oil or ladybugs as my next move.
How I enjoy fresh Kratom.
 Harvest Wash
Dry Take out the stems. Divide into to doses and fold into a satchel. Enjoy.
I place it in my jaw like chewing tobacco.

I took 6 - 12grams Kratom powder daily One gram gives me a clean alert feeling and 2g gives me the buzz I'm looking for. Just recently quit using it daily.
Honestly one nice sized leaf gives me a mild buzz. Two maybe three whole leaves is about where I want to be.
Takes a bit longer than the powder to kick in but I suppose that's because I suck on the leaves like tobacco instead of immediately ingesting. The only time ive gotten sick on Kratom was from fresh leaves. They creep up on you especially when mixed with marijuana. They will definitely numb your tougue and give you that nice & cool opiate sweat.
I dosed three leaves yesterday and went For a few hours in the yard.
