The Congolese Genocide you pay for with your cheap smartphone and computer. 3

Coltan. Cobalt. Tungsten. Gold. Resources and genocide.
We can all point fingers but lets point the finger at ourselves first. Our computer, our phone, our affordable electronics is paid for in their blood, the blood of 6 million dead, half of them young children.
This is intended to raise awareness about what some of the stuff you own comes from and what atrocities underly it. We are one world, this is your problem too.
Please discuss intelligently.

I have been aware of this for some time, and even now it still makes me break out in cold sweat what we as a society are guilty of.
The first time I noticed.. it was as if the world was falling away from under my feet. I was doing a government IT job, a large agency needed their smartphones replaced. I replaced THOUSANDS of working smartphones that had nothing wrong with them. All to be traded in for the latest versions at that time. Of course, management went nuts for the iphones.
The old phones where all scrapped. And I just could not help but feel what a senseless, senseless waste it all was. And it made me curious where these things even came from. Good God.. Allah have mercy, Christ deliver us, Holy Fucking Spirit just end this world already...
Now, I work for a recycling plant, dismantling all sorts of gadgets and whatnot that people just discared without a thought.
These gadgets are just toys.. they are not important. The human and environmental cost to obtain these toys is too high.
The digital age is an abomination. The chain goes like this: Slaves in Africa, mostly kids, mine the precious metals with great danger to their health. These metals get shipped to south-east Asia. There, it is mostly mothers that produce the toys we all desire so much in inhuman working conditions. Some so bad the companies we all love had to take anti-suicide measures!
Then the toys get shipped to richer nations (The west, middle east, Japan, etc.) where store employees make minimum wage and sell a bit of their soul in order to sell these fucking bullshit cunt toys to FUCKING yuppies, techbro's and other morons at greatly inflated prices. The profits all go to the head honcho's of these companies, never to their workers.
The ammount of suffering that went into your telephone is TOO HIGH!
These tech companies are literally satan. I can't stand all the hip, savvy advertisements they put out, it makes me sick to my stumach. But even worse are these technophiles that just HAVE to have all the gadgets. These people are so god damn self absorbed they HAVE to be demonically posessed or some shit.
But most of all I hate myself and my part in all of this. I own a laptop, I own a smartphone, television and gameboy. These are all the gadgets I have, but I make myself sick when I remember the giddyness and joy I felled purchasing these items.
So to recap: The tech industry is literally satan. Globalism and neoliberalism is hell on earth. And we're all guilty sons of bitches.
Pray for us, Asante

Governments, media, etc. etc. does a lot of work to keep us in the dark when it comes to these horrors.
Ooh, you Americans can vote for a moron or a bitch? HOW FUCKING EXCITING!! But you got some kid's bones stuck in your teeth, mate.
They HAVE to keep the general populace in the dark and distracted with bullshit. Most people, I believe, are good. If this became general and understood knowledge, these tech companies would die.
Neo-liberalism is worse than national-socialism, worse than communism, worse than capitalism, worse than serf-dom.. it is all the evil in the world disguised by marketing. It is the devil with a smiley face painted on him, and this system makes all of us guilty.
EDIT:
This stuff makes me so angry, sad and nauseous.. like nothing else in the world. Just realizing the true horror of our modern technological "utopia" is enough to make me want to kill myself.

Can't watch the videos right now but
"Dysprosium reserves, for example, might last as long as 2050 – but it's also possible that they'll run out by 2020. And if they do, then the 2019 iPhone might have to last you longer than you think."
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/our-smartphone-addiction-is-costing-the-earth-1299378
Reckless resource consumption is a major problem. So many people counter it with "we will find replacements before they're used up!"
I don't know why you think we will magically find replacements for all these precious minerals other than that's just what you want to think. We have depended on earths minerals for thousands of years and we won't be going back without catastrophe. We need to conserve and recycle now if we don't want our children to live in a world without a host of resources. Which will eventually include clean water. Which we can clean dirty water. But we need resources to do that.
Shits closer to falling apart than most people believe.

all for the sake of making some CEOs very rich. Apple are just a bunch of geniuses!
PS: most of us here are guilty of allowing consumerism to run our lives and run people in the world into the ground, and for what? some of the cheapest devices known to man...and Android phones.

Not even most of us. It's every last person who posts here. Our lifestyles are largely incompatible with anti-consumerism, because we are consumed by it completely in nearly every aspect of it lives.
Is it something we can really stop though? Seems like the world needs to sort it's finite resource issues before any kind of cultural change will happen worldwide. That may take hundreds more years.

you mean the bitch that ran the state department and could have cut the foreign aid to countries like Rwanda or the moron that appointed that secretary. the very same moron that wrote the very law that would allow the former secretary of state that now runs for president that did not cut foreign aid, the moron that has not advised his current secretary of state to cut aid to those exploiting the congolese
you're right, these neoliberals are the devil

The thing is tho, without overconsumption, our economy doubles over on itself. People need to constantly be spending money, production needs to be constantly running, in order for people to have jobs and retain the value of their assets. Everyone loses if you end overconsumption at this point. The entire economic model needs to be remade. That's the only way to fix goddamn near anything in our society.

Meh, I could care less.
I have come to the conclusion that I have absolutely no ethical obligation or responsibility towards the world or society.
I never chose to be born. I was forced into existence. I never made a conscious decision to join the game of life. Thus, I am not required to play the game of life a certain way or even take it seriously.
Whatever problems exist in the world, be it famine, violence, exploitation, etc aren't my problem. I'm not ethically obligated to spend even a second of my time trying to fix it.
If it were up to me, I would choose to make the whole universe disappear. If nothing existed, not a single sentient being would ever have to suffer.
But alas, it's not up to me. I'm just a victim who was forced into this universe without my consent.
Growing up, I've always heard the stupid phrase "the world owes you nothing." To that I reply "I don't owe the world anything."

If it weren't your problem you wouldn't be so bitter about it.
No one chooses the life they come into. But they can make choices on what they do with their life. If you have the mentality of a helpless victim you will always be a helpless victim.

I'm not really bitter actually, I'm emotionally detached.
I think it's very important to constantly be aware of the fact that you never consciously chose to be born. It's something that very few people in society acknowledge, but to me it's a very important realization.
I refuse to feel obligated to follow any set of specific moral principles when the truth of the matter is that I was forced into this earth without my consent.

I focus on things I can change. Foreign policy is not exactly one of those. My Galaxy S7 active has an IP-68 water rating (waterproof for periods of time), and I fucking love it. I would trade it for a congolese child's life in a heartbeat, but I can't, so instead I use a sweet fucking phone that I use in the shower.

If society at large could agree on anything, things could change fast.

It seems we've collectively decided to wait until our civilization crashes and most of us starve to death, before coming up with a solution. Only a relatively small segment of society actually cares enough about these things to change their lifestyle.
