At what point is treating mental illness succumbing to mental illness?

This has weighed heavy on my lately I'm going in to a psychiatrist next week to be treated for depression and anxiety, they are likely going to put me on some various medication. Now I believe I might be able to navigate this without professional help and that perhaps this medical interference will only deepen the problem. At what point is this true? How can I know the difference?

to summarize simply
you have been feeling bad
you have chosen to take action by seeing a professional
you have anxiety about what the results will be
when you see the professional you will get individual detailed attention for about an hour
when you post a few sentences here, with little data, to unknown non professionals, you of course cannot expect to get what you hope to get from the professional, who both sees you and hears your voice, and hopefully listens well.
so the conclusion is: you have anxiety about what the results will be and only by following through on your plan will you find out what the results will be.
anxiety is not the end of the world, it is just another passing emotional state

Munchausen syndrome: "I'm ill; I'll get med's and social security."
Munchausen by proxy: "You're definitely ill; You need med's, social security and I'll get some too."

"Now I believe I might be able to navigate this without professional help"---here you are second guessing yourself--if you keep doing that you will, most likely, erode what trust you do have in yourself.
"I might"---We can never know what would have happened if ... if we had done things differently -- life is inherently uncertain
"At what point is this true? How can I know the difference?" Well obviously if you suddenly felt much worse you might assume the shrink wasn't any good. Assuming there is some slight benefit, you will just have to keep using you best judgement. That's all any of us can do.
There is some humor to the situation ... you know? None of us have met the shrink either !!
I wonder how much depression is linked with refusing to laugh?? All lives are full of lots arbitrary influences and events.

What you may find when you talk about 'depression', 'anxiety' etc with other people who even aren't 'experts' is that often THEY will put on role of psychiatric nurse and inform you you NEED 'experts'/'professional help'
You even see this a lot in the soap operas on TV. They will cover the subject of 'mental illness' with their character, and you see how IF they stop their medication they 'go funny' and other characters turn into psychiatric nurses demanding they MUSt take their medication. This is all propaganda aimed to entrench a myth of mental illness. That because you have these terms they use, 'depression', 'anxiety' and so on, this means you are biochemically defective and need 'experts' to 'treat' you, most often than not with D R U G S. Hmmm how ironic in the culture with its so-called 'war on drugs' yet its central social controlling means ARE drugs. THEIR drugs. Funny that ey?
You are asking questions which is good. the way we overcome dodgy myths is questioning their authority, and you will, like said, doing so get a lot of resistance from one and all. Stay strong. But I recommend you really find out about the mental illness myth.
Also explore why are you depressed and anxious?

You will be treated badly using psych drugs. This is the time to realize that and you do on some level yet still believe in "the system" so how can we explain "the difference" let alone do that in any confidence.
You are a mess and grasping at the straws the med system is handing out.

it's not like passing gas, or crying after a movie. it's what YOU make it, not some phase. get a grip folks!
