Jars or Bags?
    #23690775 - 09/29/16 02:09 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I'm hearing mixed things about jars vs spawn bags?  Opinions?

In a nutshell, bags are easier to fuck up but you can sterilize more grains per run. Jars are reusable, but bags are disposable.

Bags are also a real pain to do without a flowhood. I wouldn't recommend doing bags if you're using a SAB, but with a flowhood they rock.

All my quart jars are now drinking glasses. The only jars I use are pints for millet and half gallons for pasteurizing bulk substrate. Quart jars make great drinking glasses though.

The eco-friendly way to go is jars.  The economical way to go is jars unless you have a large sized grow.  Plus jars are just cool.  Maybe its a old man thing, but they are so useful for other purposes.  I do agree with NumeroEno that even the medium sized bags (i forgot how many qts) are just a pain in a SAB.

One thing I do recommend the bags for is tampanensis.  Knock up a quart jar of rye with some spores and after 6 weeks transfer any small truffles into a few bags and forget about it in a closet for 6-12 months.

Spawn bags are recyclable, and reusable if you're creative. I save all my used ones, and I'm thinking about trying pasteurization in them. Could stuff them full of straw and use them for oysters too, but poking holes in them would limit their reusability.
