How do I make a control myco bag?

I preseal 3 quarts of rye berries in large myco bags. I want to do a control bag. can I put agar in it and PC it with my other bags?

What are you testing. Your sterilization. or your inoculation

Then make a control bag and don't inoculate it even with a blank agar wedge. If you're testing your culture. Then inoculate a bag with a blank plate to see if it's your procedure of your culture

I went through a stage where I kept getting contaminated WBS jars.
I didn't know if it was my sterilization or inoculation that was killing my vibe.
I set up a control jar for each step of the process and narrowed it down to my inoculation procedure. I tightened up my SAB tek a bit and now I don't see any more contamination in my jars during colonization.
I understand you are using bags-but the principle is the same...
Also, I decided to keep my control jar I made during sterilization for quite a long while before trashing it. It is still sitting in my Grow Room with 0 contaminates in it. Properly sterilized grains ftw!

Gotcha.
I seem to be fighting bacteria that looks invisible to my eyes. I think I can see the mycelia fighting it as it colonizes the bag. But with these controls, I suppose I will need to open the bag and smell, yes? And when is a good amount of time? two weeks? it all goes bad after a while, yes?

I've been hearing people say that grains are hard to fully sterilize, and that its better to think of a creating a window of time where the mycelia can take over and win. But I like the idea of a clean bag sitting around for a while.
But isn't bacteria hard to tell in a sealed myco bag?

Smell is not really a good indicator of bacteria IME.

Jars can look clean but if mycelium is having a hard time colonizing its a way better indication than smell or grain appearance

I like the above approach to identifying bacteria in grain. When you watch the mycelium come to a stop in a small or large circle of your vessel you can definitely tell there's something janky going on.

OK, but I need some clarification. If I am making these control bags... and if i'm not supossed to open the pre-sealed bag and smell, then how can I tell if there is bacteria, when there is intentionally no mycelia growing because it's a control?

In this case smell would help you with figuring out if the control has bacteria. Also appearance too. Use all the things in your repertoire to ID bacteria.
For example this has a small wet spot on it
it is a jar I didn't PC, and left for about a month. It is literally covered in bacteria, and smelled fuckin awful. But the actual grains don't show bacteria all that well. Not without the presence of mycelium.

Can I make a control for my pasteurized coco/verm substrate? Would it go bad without nutrients?

Doubt it will go bad. Apparently people have left hydrated coir in Ziploc bags for at least a year, and rehydrated it a little, and used it successfully lol

Also you don't need to pasteurize coir. Boiling water hydrated, then stored in ziplock bags will keep for months no issues.

Thats what I thought. I have heard of people fixing contam problems with improving their pasteurization tek. I guess I'll resort to doing the oven thing if I run out of ideas.

If your tubs keep contaminating and you are using coir, 98% chance your vectors lie within your spawn, not the substrate.
