Can someone please explain to me what portlandia is all about, what it is they're mocking in the show, and why I should thinking it's funny
Some skits I get and are funny and I get the making fun of hipsters part but what else am I missing?
What about this city sucks so bad as the modest mouse guy said in his interview with polish journalists a few years ago
Thanks

Portlandia is making fun of all the Hipsters. Portland is hipster central. There are small coffee shops all over and barcades n all sorts of stuff.
None of it is "bad" per say its more ridiculous. I lived in Portland for a few years and its not a terrible city. Way to big for me though.
Just like all big cities crime is its main downside really, lots of homeless and shady people but as long as your careful its not too bad
I have a friend going to college there and some family that live there, one thing I am jealous of is all the live music Portland gets

Not minding that time's passing by I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

I like Portland, my second favorite city. First being Seattle.
I'm actually working on moving that way. In east Oregon currently.

Idk eugene and portland both have their pro's and con's I would much rather live in Eugene becouse of how mellow and awesome of a town it is.
But sometimes I wish I lived in or at least closer to portland so there would be more to do. They get like 5-10x as much music due to having way more venues.

Portlandia takes Portland satire to the extreme.
Its a similar premise to Reno 911: making fun of Reno Police to the max, super exaggerated.
Portlandia exaggerates Portland's people by a huge margin.
Ive been to Portland, awesome city, one of my favorites. Hipsters are common but not THAT common. Portland is a huge mix of people, as most (all?) cities are: lots of variety in walks of life.
And Eugenes got the music, but PDX has the most for sure

Yeah I try not to complain about Eugenes music selection, we get a lot of good stuff too. In fact most of the best acts that go to P town come to Eugene
But they still have like 5-10x+ as many venues as us and the size of the city gives them a much more happening night life and music scene.

Tbh I really love all three cities. Portland has amazing parks and boat loads of mushrooms. Salem has some that you can disappear into but you never get rid of noise pollution. Not as many mushrooms since they use cedar bark and not many people spawn here. Eugene has as a lot of picking spots but nowhere near PDX. I haven't spent a ton of time in Eugene except for visiting family and going to events. It seemed more calm, with fewer homeless and fewer "let me tell you how bad my life is" hipsters.

It is to a degree but you can still find plenty of that downtown. I witnessed crack heads smoking crack literally right across the street from the downtown bus station once Also right across the street from a downtown campus location though I am not sure it was finished at the time. Another time I was drunk downtown with 2 friends and this tweaker walked up only to tell us how bad meth is and how we should never use it. He said he used it like once and instantly became an addict and started breaking into cars to get his fix. Then he told us to stick with natural psychedelics and cannabis. Only time I have met a chill tweaker...
A lot of our homeless have tent camps in semi hidden locations instead of the blatant ones all over Portland.

I knew tons of homeless people that'd migrate from Seattle up north to Portland because the winters were a little nicer and they have more resources available to them.

IMO it's really about the whole west coast mentality as much as Portland specifically. People are weird there, and it's kinda funny, and the show blows that out of proportion for comedic effect.

I find Portlandia pretty funny. I've never been to the West Coast but the show does kinda make me want to check out Portland if I'm ever out there.
