Why is white meat chicken so much more expensive than dark meat chicken?

I don't get it. Dark meat chicken is so much more succulent, juicy, and flavorful. White meat chicken is bland and dry.

There's two thighs on every chicken, but there's also two breasts on every chicken. So it makes no sense to me why white meat is two to three times more expensive than dark meat.

Is it because of racism, or what? :flowstone: Discuss.

My favorite part of the chicken is the tail. Which sucks, because it's a part that I can never find in this country, it's usually thrown out. It's extremely succulent and fatty, and is tiny, about the size of a nickel. My second favorite part are the wings.

I swear, white Americans always throw away the best parts of the animals. I knew this fisherman that owned his own boat, and he fished for salmon and yellowtail for his own personal meals, and he said he threw away the head and the belly!!! I was like OMFG WHAT ARE YOU DOING, that's the best part!!!! The belly is where all the fat is, the belly makes the best sashimi, and the cheek meat is excellent when it's grilled until crispy!

People don't eat the gizzards or intestines or organs, not only are these parts delicious, but they're also the most loaded with vitamins and healthiest for you.


What is it that you like about dark pussy?

Never really noticed that much of a price difference if I buy a full oven chicken it has both....and usually I buy chicken thighs or quarters to BBQ which would be dark I'm guessing and breasts would be white.

Thighs and legs are dark, the upper half is white meat (breasts, ribs)

I think... :lol:

As for the thread topic...I have no input really, but it is like that here in Canada as well. (more expensive for the white meat) and I also agree, dark meat is superior.

I agree dark taste better too, breast is pretty dry depending how it's cooked but sometimes it can taste really good.

Yup, thighs and legs are dark. White meat is the breast. I don't know why chicken wings are classified as white meat though, it tastes more to me like it's dark. Wings are my second favorite part of the chicken, they're so juicy and succulent and fatty. Tastes more to me like dark meat than white meat.

The breast is just so.... dry and tasteless. The only time I like it is in certain salads, but even in dishes where white meat tastes good, I feel like it would still always taste better with dark meat.

Strange how North Americans prefer dark meat, in almost every other country dark meat is the preferred option.

I don't know man, but all you S&M freaks are overthinking it. I'm agreeing with you here.

Many white Americans don't eat those things, but many Europeans do.

I have a "don't knock til you try it" attitude towards most things in life, so am not outside the realm of eating things which others might consider abnormal.


I want to make Haggis, which is full of all sorts of innards, and is traditional Scottish food, so have to give it a try since I have Scottish blood in my veins.

I buy pounds of breast meat for like $2.50. Wings and drumsticks for making hot wings on the other hand might cost $5 or $6. Turkey legs are typically too expensive to warrant purchase.

So in my experience at least, I'd say that white meat is typically cheaper.

I'd say the popularity in white meat chicken revolves around it's ability to absorb flavour, whereas the dark meat has more of it's own thing going on. Personally I usually go for the white meat but if I'm going to cook something tasty up I like boneless skinless thighs. They're not as dry and the portions seem more reasonable, plus because they're smaller more of the seasonings or whatever you're using is going to be covering a larger surface area unlike cooking a whole chicken breast. So more flavour.

White meat is far more expensive here but the quality of it is far better, also less bones and fat. IMO dark meat has more of a fatty oily texture and flavor.

XLCaps you're righ, it has far more versatility in preperations. As well as being able to absorb flavors like you said. I always use white met in my red or green curries.

Slow cooked curry with thigh/bones/skin still in is fucking delicious. Curry flavor deepens the longer you cook it, by the end the chicken meat will fall off the bone.

Red meat with the bone is also awesome for making homemade chicken stock with. Fattier the better, makes for the tastiest meals.

Really though, the price discrepancy is probably due to demand... what else, really?
