Salmon caught near Seattle proven to be inundated with antidepressants, cocaine

Natural News
(NaturalNews) We're all familiar with horror stories about juveniles on drugs, but normally it's humans that are involved, not fish. This case, however, involves juvenile chinook salmon who never had the chance to "Just Say No."
Disturbing new research has indicated that young salmon found in Puget Sound tested positive for more than 80 different drugs, including cocaine, antidepressants and dozens of other medications used by humans.
When researchers tested the water at and near sewage treatment plants in the estuaries of Puget Sound near Seattle, Washington, they discovered high levels of drugs and personal care products – at some of the highest concentrations found anywhere in the nation.
The tissues of migratory chinook salmon and local staghorn sculpin also contained these compounds – even in the fish found in estuaries far from the sewage treatment plants where the water was previously considered "pristine."
As reported by The Seattle Times:
"The medicine chest of common drugs also included Flonase, Aleve and Tylenol. Paxil, Valium and Zoloft. Tagamet, OxyContin and Darvon. Nicotine and caffeine. Fungicides, antiseptics and anticoagulants. And Cipro and other antibiotics galore.
"Why are the levels so high? It could be because people here use more of the drugs detected, or it could be related to wastewater-treatment plants' processes, said Jim Meador, an environmental toxicologist at NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle and lead author on a paper published this week in the journal Environmental Pollution."
Sewage treatment plants unable to cope
The presence of these drugs in the water appears to be related to the inability of the wastewater plants to fully remove these chemicals during treatment. But high fecal coliform counts in some areas of the Sound suggest that leaky septic tanks may also be contributing to the problem.
Some of the drugs found in the fish and the water of Puget Sound are difficult to remove using standard sewage treatment methods:
"Treatment plants in King County are effective in removing some drugs in wastewater, but many drugs are recalcitrant and remain. Seizure drugs, for instance, are very hard to remove, and ibuprofen levels are knocked down — but not out — during treatment, said Betsy Cooper, permit administrator for the county's Wastewater Treatment Division."
Who is really to blame?
But the blame should not be placed entirely on the treatment plants, according to Cooper. "You have treatment doing its best to remove these, chemically and biologically," she said, "but it's not just the treatment quality, it's also the amount that we use day to day and our assumption that it just goes away."
Shamefully, our own drug dependence is now poisoning other species as well. We have become a nation of drugged-out zombies, but that doesn't give us the right to turn fish and other animals into the same.
Maybe it's time to start realizing that prescription pharmaceuticals, over-the-counter remedies and illicit drugs are doing us – and our environment – far more harm than good.
We've bought into the Big Pharma-created myth that there is a chemical solution to all our problems – physical and mental – when in reality these substances are the cause of much of our "dis-ease" and general out-of-balance lifestyles.
The obvious solution
Although Western pharmaceutical medicine arguably has some value, almost everything these drugs are designed to treat can be more effectively dealt with using natural methods which promote healing rather than dependence.
And one of the obvious lessons from the situation in Puget Sound is that when you make bad decisions at one level, there will be negative effects on other levels as well. We don't live in a vacuum, and our unhealthy lifestyles have an impact on all living things.

This clearly explains the high depression and suicide rate amongst PNW salmon between the ages of 1-3. Now if only we could solve why the people are following the same trend. It must be due to salmon consumption.

Sadly I was eating fish so much until fukishima, now I rarely eat any.
I eat sushi sometimes, but that's about it.
They've been finding a lot of areas that have extremely high levels of RX drugs in the water and in the animals around. It's not a good thing in anyway.

Yeah it's fucked up. They did a recent study and found small traces of cocaine in the drinking water here.
I assume RX drugs must be in there too, among other shit.

close to home they found meth, cocaine, and a lot of antidepressants and benzos in the water. The filtration systems are not set up to take out chemicals that are pissed out, or when people flush drugs.
I had well water at a house I flushed roughly 100 grams of MXE down the toilet once.

I flushed 100 grams of mxe, an ounce of mushrooms, 3.5 grams of 2c-e, 3 grams of 6-apb, and 5 grams of hash.
I lived on a dead end road and a sheriff pull to the end of the road and stopped, and then a white SUV whipped into my driveway. I was on a phone with my friend and I said I think I may be getting raided, and the cop tapped his brake lights 3 times, I was high as fuck and was like fuck man they're going to raid me im flushing everything, he said I was being paranoid, but the second I flushed everything the suv and sheriff backed out and drove off.
I got nervous as fuck, and I had to go to the bank to deposit some money into my account for a bill ( all of this was years and years ago when I lived in a different county ) and I pull off my road and instantly a black unmarked car pulled behind me, I got nervous and pulled into a circle k and a drug task force cop got out and walked to the door and opened it for me "Mr ______" he said to me and nodded. So I know I wasn't being crazy.
Luckily nothing of that sort has happened in years.
I have been living very safe and low key lately.

Darvon? They quit making that stuff like over ten years ago. Strange that its prevalent.

Seriously can someone explain to me how they found a drug that hasnt been around for over a decade in those fish? It doesnt make any sense.
Also this thread reminds me of that one video where a group of rednecks poured a can of beer down a catfish's mouth

Maybe water preserves it or its metabolites? Perhaps when it was made illegal tons of it were dumped/ flushed too

Pretty soon, people are going to be getting high off salmon. You never know if it's gonna be a benzo, a stimulant, an antidepressant, it's like drug roulette every time you fish!

Fuck I feel really bad now for flushing That half OZ of crystal meth my girlfriend had. She didn't have the self control to flush it herself.
Damn wtf Im sorry society that was my bad. I will never flush drugs again.
I think a lot of the prescriptions drugs could be getting into our water from people peeing though. For instance birth control doesn't metabolize so it ends up in the water supply no matter if flushed or not.
I actually feel super bad about flushing that meth now.... I was just doing right wrong I suppose.
There's almost some irony in the fact that so many people flush their coke and addictive drugs to get away from them but all the while playing a small role in a greater affect to mass micro dose all of society with the very same drugs.

If we just mass dosed the ocean with LSD so everyone was tripping balls off their salmon maybe they'd all wake the fuck and realize something needs to change man! Maybe then we wouldn't have all these drugs in our fish man!

You guys don't realise that the water that you drink is recycled. Meaning, anything you throw into it goes down the tubes. All the way to the cess pool to be bio-filtered and returned into the Earth or back to you. Ever hear of a shit-plant? That's what they do.
This is exactly why ive recently began filtering my water.
