Dry Psilocybe Mushroom Concentrate From Filtered Water Downloadable PDF version attached
I've been mulling over whether or not to post this or not as it is far from being groundbreaking but I've enjoyed my experiences with the resulting concentrate so much that I thought there was no harm in putting it out there. Having originally tried this as a fun experiment I don't think I could go back to eating them or making tea again. It's quick and effective and doesn't require any skill or solvents
Quote:
The isolation of psilocybin seemed to be quite reasonable. This alkaloid is reasonably soluble in boiling water from which it can be nicely crystallized. It is less soluble in boiling methanol, and almost insoluble in boiling ethanol. And the extraction efficiency is optimum with methanol and almost as good with ethanol. -- Dr. Alexander Shulgin
In this tutorial I shall be working with a hot water extraction and simple filtration to obtain a dry concentrate which contains around 4% active magic, the main downside to this technique is that our final product is highly hygroscopic so must be stored in a desiccated container, more on this later.
For more scientific and accurate extraction information see the numerous tutorials on the real thing, from here onwards we will focus on my “Keep It Simple Stupid” water extraction assuming we have no access to solvents or don't want to use solvents for whatever reason.
Materials
- Dried Powdered Mushrooms (I extract from 5.5g of dried p. semilanceata)
- Suitably Sized Funnel
- Coffee Filters or Substitute (I used kitchen roll for tutorial)
- Thermos Flask or Similar container for mixing
- Saucepan
- Shallow Pyrex baking dish
- Scraper such as a razor or craft knife blade etc
- Silica Gel Crystals for storage requirements
- Latex Gloves
- Empty Gel Capsules

Extracting and Filtering
Start by bringing about ¾ of a Pint of water to the boil, we add the powdered mushrooms to this in the thermos flask, seal the lid and shake vigorously. Pour the solution through a sieve or similar to remove the bulk of the mushroom matter before proceeding to the main filter steps to avoid clogging or accidental spillages.

Repeat the filtration to obtain a pale yellow (pee coloured) liquid that is as clear as possible.

A repurposed vitamin pill container with fine grade filter of your choice, holes in base allow you to pressurise it using your mouth and lungs to blow the solution through the filter and out the holes much faster than waiting for gravity to feed it through.

Evaporate the Excess Water Pour the filtered solution into a saucepan and slowly bring to the boil, allow to simmer until the product is reduced to dark opaque liquid.

I like to run this through the little micro filter followed by a small quantity of clean water to flush the filter paper. Heat the oven to a low setting such as 60C / 140F (I’ve made potent extract using as much as 150C / 302F your mileage may vary, so avoid getting anxious about heat degradation). Pour the concentrated solution onto the pyrex dish base and pop it in the oven. If you can maintain a low temperature below 100C, be patient and allow it to cook off all the water content.

From here on moisture is not your friend since the resulting product is highly hygroscopic and must be collected and stored while it’s still hot out the oven, trial and error has led me to this being the most successful route to retain the consistency.
When everything is ready there should be a crisp dry extract remaining on the surface of the pyrex dish, if it’s not completely dry put it back until it is.

Storage and Handling
I store the concentrate in airtight dessicated tubs (blood sugar test strip containers) which are kept inside the coffee tin I add an additional anti-moisture pack for good measure and seal the lid on.

I fill capsules with the concentrate to make each capsule around 400mg

These are my estimated assumptions based on personal consumption...

Hmmm intersting.....
Probably work with cubes, have you tried using the microwave instead of the oven for the drying part??

Doesn't everyone say a microwave will destroy actives??

I don't know never tried, sounds plausible. Might be a waste to try unless you've got loads
I friend of mine used to have bottles of liquid ket and he used to just put it in the microwave till it crystallised. But that's probably a different kettle of fish.

Hey, the oven works best for me, I'm a bit dubious to nuke the potion in the microwave but I might give it a bash at some point just for testing. With the the simple water extract - filter - reduce - evaporate way of doing it, my test subjects have confirmed one capsule feels like around 15mg with two so far being a nice happy medium. 30mg is about the average that most studies have settled on to be a good dose for therapy and so far these capsules are proving to be consistent and reliable and are easy stored, just keep them moisture free and can take a notion to pop one anytime with minimal fuss, I really like being able to do that, especially on a hike as no need to prepare tea or eat them.
The most I've taken so far was 5 which was not the best idea i've ever had, it started out fun but my girlfriend found me in quite a confused state around the time it peaked, 2-3 capsules for me is great though. I can't understand why but the effects seem to last about two or three hours longer than the same dose taken as tea, this has been the case for my other willing test subjects so.. so far a nice easy way of measuring our doses and eliminates the discomfort i usually get from the chitin which makes my asthma flare up and causes me stomach cramps, the capsules feel much nicer without needing to take an antihistamine or feel bloated which is great for me.
Obviously an alcohol or methanol extraction is going to be much cleaner and potent but I rarely have these to hand.

Microwave works, I am half way into quite an unexpected voyage.
Way stronger than I expected, made a dry toffee resin like substance that didn't smell of anything, tasted bitter so I ate it and currently very high, very very high actually.
It adds a bit of scary danger too so might be worth reading http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/blog/2004/11/24/warning-water-can-explode-in-the-microwave/
