I just got some tyvek envelopes to use for filter discs and they seem really thick. Like to thick to let air through. Is that normal? Total noob post

I'm no expert but in my experience your filter disc shouldn't be so thick that there would be no air passage that would defeat its purpose but if someone else corrects me go with what they say

I have Tyvek envelope filters. They work. On my last run of 20 jars, I had half of them Tyvek, half SFDs. Only 2 jars contaminated; they were the ones with SFDs.
Not saying Tyvek is better than SFDs, but it certainly does the job.

Use the thing that is meant to be used instead of the thing that you won't know has failed until it's already failed.

Not sure what you're trying to say. SFDs are meant to be used. They fail... sometimes.

Everything fails tyvek, polifil, sfd, cotton. Nothing is 100% contam free. They all work incuiding no modified lids. Silcone failures is my biggest issues

Well the thing about SFDs is it's not very well known that PC temps will change their pore size, like it is with a certain other unnamed "filter" choice.
Even polyfill is a better long term filter material than tyvek, and I would sooner jab a 16ga luer lock needle through my finger webbing than use polyfill. I would actually rather use completely unmodified lids than use polyfill or tyvek. But if I want GE and I want to know it's got the best chances of success, the choice is clear.

I've only used tyvek envelopes for the last 5 years. They get the job done. Are they the best? I have no idea, I just get good results from them. Also, the USPS will ship a big box of 500 straight to your door for $0.00 !!

"Tyvek is functional and cheap or free. However, synthetic filter disks last for many years and thousands of uses. Tyvek tends to get ripped at the edges of the lid, often resulting in only one use. It can also twist, making the lid very hard to get off later for G2G or other procedures. The time spent cutting tyvek to shape each time will easily outweigh any cost advantage. Even though I sell tyvek on my website, I still prefer filter disks. -RR"

Got a couple dozen jars with tyvek colonizing now. Many dozen in the past I used tyvek. One layer is fine.
But Ive got 50 sfds coming Wednesday so I'm holding off making any more grain masters until then.
I like tyvek because it's free, if you need 50 filters its a few envelopes and a few minutes cutting circles. No clean up, just trash them.
Sfds are especially made for getting ge to colonizing spawn. Cannot see how tyvek would be better, unless you cannot afford $1 per sfd
