Bumping this as I continue to pursue their identity. I am leaning to Conocybe cyanopus, or whatever it may be called today (Pholiotina cyanopus comes to mind).
Thanks to anyone who can help resolve this conundrum. Sad thing, if they're C. cyanopus, I threw them out, not having a positive ID at this time. Up side, if they were, I own the land I found them on and should find more now the rains are here.

I was going to say Conocybe, but maybe not cyanopus. Did you observer any bluing at the base of the stem which would make you think they were cyanopus?
I have a microscope, but it needs a few pieces fixed on it before she's up an running, so am clueless about spores.

I'm with you on the Conocybe finding. Unfortunately, no bruising observed at this time. My understanding is it's rhizomes at the base of the stipe that show the bluing and I may not have recovered enough of the stipe to ascertain this.
These being active or not is relatively unimportant compared to learning to identify things properly. If I want actives I can grow them here with relative impunity. Thanks for the reminder about the bluing, as it is definitely important with candidates like this.
There are a pair of mushroom field taxonomy sessions followed by a guided foraging expedition that I am signed up for over the next coupled of weeks that hopefully get me going in the right direction. They also have a seminar on cultivation for the home hobbyist that I intend to sign up for. It will be interesting to compare to tek methods offered here.

Those are not active Conocybe IMHO, actives ones have chalk white stems that turn blue, they also smell active.
