I watched the version on Comedy Central ages ago, and caught a couple of the newer ones because it airs after Jeopardy. My one year old son seemed particularly thrilled by it, and concerned about the battle bots attacking each other. He yells, "nononono! Bad robot! Noooo!" He's a sensitive little guy.

What are the restrictions on building a battle bot? Like, could I just use a wide band jammer to disable the other robot and then spray it with liquid nitrogen to disable the electrical system, while using an HHO torch to slice it in half?

Thats pretty cool torch there.
The weapons have to be mechanical, like a hammer or spinning body. No chemical, electronic (like RF disrupters), or nuclear (haha) weapons allowed.
Would be cool if there were a battle bots with zero weapon rules, but it would likely be really dangerous and be held outside in an outdoor arena

I'm planning on making a handheld one for my brother for christmas. 10ci 3000psi hho tank, two flashback arresters, miniature electronic solenoid and igniter from taser parts. It's going to be dope, like a lightsaber with a shorter "blade".
Cylinder specs: v= 10ci v=l*π*r^2 l=10ci/(π*r^2) r=0.75in l= 10ci/1.76714586765in length=5.67in length w/ reg = 6.5in diameter = 1.5in link: http://milsigdirect.com/shop/new/10-ci-tc-dot-air-bottle/
Flow specs: p1*v1=p2*v2 29psi*x=3000psi*10ci v1= 1039.5ci = 0.0353146667*1039.5ci = 36 cubic feet set flow rate= 36cfm minutes per cylinder = 1
All in all it should come out to less than 2in in diameter and less than 12in in length with one minute of use per 10ci cylinder.
Wow... I can really feel the adderall kicking in... yep, sorry for going off topic.
A battlebot contest without rules would be SO DOPE... I'm talking rdx shaped charges, rf jammers, chemical lasers, torches, liquid nitrogen, microwave directional jamming, thermite charges.... etc.

Just trying to figure out how to stabilize H2/O2 mixture now, might use a twin tank design or a series of chemical reaction chambers to supply hho more safely.
I'm thinking Battle Tanks would be a good title. Remote controlled tanks with multiple operators using FPV. Not sure on the legality but who cares as it would be so entertaining. Certain build teams could probably get exploratory funding from in-q-tel or darpa as the military applications would be endless.

Battle Tanks. Awesome name. I bet somewhere in the world, theres an underground battle tank show happening right now
To Banana man: what would your bot be called? If i had a battle bot, i would name him Controlled Chaos (hinting the to RC component of driving it).

Idk but i wanted onw with a bid drill on it that could go through metal. Probably unrealistic but it would look dank regardless.
Id peobably name it a drill pun where i replace drill with kill or something lame like that

Want to try and design one with me (blueprints, not IRL)? It would be a really fun and educational electric/mechanical engineering project.

Battle bots was alright at first until everyone figured out that "weapons" are mostly ineffective against robots and as a result the designs devolved into who could build a wedge with the lowest center of gravity. BORING!
I'm pretty surprised that they brought it back

Yo Logical, we first need to complete a list of weapons/defense systems and design a chassis that supports said systems. We should start with ranged weapons systems and active/passive defenses as they will be the most critical elements IMO. This includes directed energy weapons (parabolic microwave emitter @ 2-90ghz, already exist), railgun(s) (really easy to build, already exist), and possibly a q-switched YAG laser (a lot smaller than chemical lasers) that ignites air to form plasma, by using an adjustable focal lens and a range finder, the focal point could be adjusted to the range of the target on the fly essentially creating a plasma cannon (these already exist in real life).
As far as active defenses go, microwave jammers could be used to create a field around the tank to jam missiles, the tank would be enclosed in a faraday cage to prevent interference/jamming/HERF/EMPs.
I think a railgun would be the most effective offensive weapon as it isn't susceptible to active or passive jamming and has devastating effects on a target.

Absolutely, and they do need a huge amount of instantaneous energy from a capacitor bank, but the capacitor bank would serve multiple systems and easily fit inside a tank-size battle thingamabob. Deep cycle batteries would charge the capacitor bank, and a diesel generator would charge the deep cycle batteries.

When i was in 3rd grade, my friends and i designed "traffic clearers" to solve the problem of traffic in L.A. They were basically voltron-style robots with tanks for feet and shoulder rockets and circular saws for hands that would rise from the ocean for one day every ten years to murder everyone on the freeway.
