5 possible Pan subbs from Montana
    #23677463 - 09/25/16 05:43 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys, bit of an unorthodox post for you here. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help!

So I've been hunting pann subbs here in Montana for a few weeks My first few hunts were clueless wandering through wooded areas looking for orange mushrooms. However, I think I'm getting this down a little bit.
Today I walked 2 different cow/horse fields. I managed to find what i can see as six different mushroom species. Again, I was only picking ones which i thought could potentially be the pan subs I've been looking for.

I have numbered them 1-6; and they are currently sitting on paper printing.
All of these mushrooms were found either growing directly from poo or on ground which has been heavily pood on by our furry friends.

The only exceptions are number 4/ 6. I know that pan subs are supposed to print black, like way black (therefore the gills must be at least dark, yes?). But these guys look just like what I was hoping for as far as the caps go and they were absolutely everywhere, saw easily 200 of them today. What is this?? And why is it mocking me?

Anyways, here are the pics. Thank you guys so much, if you need any additional info or pics of a sample just let me know. Worth noting that none of these really bruised.

Now that I am home and looking at more pictures of pan subs I'm dreading I may have come up short again :frown:

I am preemptively assuming these are inactive, not pan subs. Should I give up hunting? I must have slowly walked almost crawled through 2 miles of pasture today, and as far as i know I'm not doing anything wrong..? so discouraging.

1. Panaeolus papilionaceus
2. Paneolus- not sure which. maybe active.
3. Hemistropharia Semiglobata (probably but more pictures could help) they could also be psilocybe semilancaeata.
4. maybe an agrocybe but i really cant say
5 and 6 im not sure of, but i will confidently say neither is active.
Wait for a trusted identifier- these were my first thoughts

3 is definitely not Libs. Semiglobata for sure, imo.

Was number two growing directly on dung or on the ground? It looks like a panaeolus to me and I don't think its a Panaeolus Papilionaceus, so it might be active (though it doesn't seem overwhelmingly likely so don't get your hopes up too much). Do you have a spore print for that one? Also do you see any bluish bruising where damaged?

It sort of looks like Panaeolus Olivaceus, but it has never been documented from Montana as far as I know, and I'm not that well versed in separating the similar species of panaeolus reliably, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I do hope however that despite my deficit in knowledge I've been helpful in some capacity. Have a good night.

IIRC, 2 was growing near dung, not out of it. All of these except the obvious 4 and 6 stained absolutely black. No bruising from what I can tell
