Now that is some thick wilderness. If you like weed, remote and pretty coast, and seafood, Maine is hard to beat on the east coast IMO and a winner in the northeast, obviously.
hmmm. i like weed. i like pretty coast. and i love seafood.
how are new englanders in general? some people describe them as harsh and even cold (no pun intended lol) but how true is this? mostly just a stereotype or what? also anyone been to Portland, Maine area? how is it around that particular part? what are some larger sized cities you would recommend? cant really think of many maine cities off the top of my head
I prefer the word "terse" to describe New Englanders. It's true to some extent. People in Maine can be pretty friendly, but they're weird. Sorta like:

West Virginia.
If I lived in huntington, WV I would have eaten a bullet a long time ago.
I'm from West Virginia, although I live in Colorado now. The stereotypes are not true, and only the southernmost counties, bordering Virginia, are poverty stricken... of course, that's like 500 people living in poverty, since those counties have been deserted for decades. Basically, I'm telling you that you have no idea what you're talking about. I miss WV, the front range is so ugly and barren compared to Appalachia. State I would hate to live: California
Very true. I live in northern West Virginia and I really like it here. Plus there are so many beautiful areas of the state, cooper's rock, black water falls, Seneca, etc. If you like outdoor activity it's a great place to live. White water rafting, hiking, all kinds or junk to do. There's not alot of hustle and bustle big city life where I live but I like it that way. When I was growing up at my parents house was a four Wheeler trail that went on for miles and miles it was fantastic just pulling my 4 Wheeler out of the garage and just riding all day.
Their are bad parts of the state just like any other state but it's not as bad as people think. And yes there is some bad areas in the southern part of the state. But most of the state is great.
Also if your a Big partier Morgantown is the place to be. Where WVU is located. I went their as a freshman in 2004 and it was a huge culture shock. Every house in a 4 block radius around my dorm had about 7 kegs in the yard and the whole area was packed with college kids. It was nuts, every yard as far as I could see was packed with drunken fools.
Where I live now is much more quiet though Haha. I really enjoy it however. I visited and vacation in a lot of different areas of the country but always lived here. There's alot of awesome places, Colorado and Hawaii, for example but I love my home.

I would not like living in the weird seasons of Alaska , aureaborealis sound cool but 24 hour sunlight / darkness sounds terrifying.

off the top of my head? its full of liberal yuppies and stoners, a lot of gangs, super high income and sales tax, everything is expensive, you can't have a nice lawn, wildfires, gun laws
I Moved to California recently and it is great. Wages are generally higher here than most parts of the country so even though most things are more money it kind of evens out. I'm actually able to save more here than where I was living because of the higher wages. People have beautiful lawns and I'm not too worried about fires. Haven't had any problems with gangs either. The weather is always nice and there is always something fun to get into.

Only large city in Maine is Portland and that's not really a 'large city' by my standard. Boston is the closest large city I'd recommend.
I am a bred and born northeasterner and I live in a city notorious for it's attitude(Philly, though honestly I think it's just a misunderstanding), I find most people in the Bos-Wash corridor in the large population centers to be very warmhearted as long as you
a. don't get in their way when they're in a rush. b. you're not encountering them on the road. c. you're genuine. fake nice is a thing here, like everywhere, but most people are for real and the exteriors are a bit hardened because they have to be to live where they are.
As a whole Americans are very kind people, and it holds true for the northeast as much as anywhere, the thing is that we are a genuine bunch of folks and our exterior may be a bit cold or aloof but once you get to talking to us you'd be shocked by how kind people are.

There's a reason residents are fleeing California for Texas

Yep, one day I'll probably move home, although we are also considering Maine or Vermont as a place to settle down. My job took me out to Colorado, and I was very dissappointed, although it has grown on me some. I'll be relocating to Northern VA soon, just south of D.C (work again), and I'm excited to be so close to home. I'm also, excited for,the proximity to Pittsburgh, D.C, Maryland, Philadelphia, and NYC, since we are big foodies, and die hard Steelers fans. I'm originally from Greenbrier County (down south), how about you?
