Lipa Kreepa said: Hey Spanish, can you point Me in a good direction for a good pereskiopsis graft soil mix? I'm been making due with what I have, but once I start grafting trichocereus seedlings I want to make sure in working with something really good. I know its prob an annoying question but could you help a brother out? I have some pumice, coco, perlite, bone meal, verm, crab meal and even some blood meal around... The soil I have on hand is called the 'euro mix' and its a local mix of earthworm castings and peat... I hear peat is bad news with succulents and cacti though So I've been trying to hold off with using it. Suggestions ?
I would suggest 2 measures of top soil, 1 measure of wormcasts, half a measure of kelp meal (optional if you don´t have it - substitute blood meal - or crab meal??) - 5 measures of coarse grit. That will do you fine.
Thanks Spanish
I've only come across top soil at the chain hardware stores, never at organic nurseries. Is the hardware store stuff okay? I don't have kelp but cool I guess I'll make up some crab and bone meal ... I see you mentioned grit, is that just another way of saying sand? We have river sand here but its highly polluted. Would pumice and or perlite be a good substitute? How about using coco coir, would you suggest using some of that in the mix?

As ever, make the most of what you can get and substitute what you can´t. But you are in the US so your garden centres carry a whole lot more stuff than mine do. If I can eventually get kelp - no reason why you can´t.

Careful, that kelp will require microbial action to become useful to your plants. Don't wanna have to break out the h2O2 again . . .

He recommended earthworm castings which has an enormous microbial quality to it. I always grow with that element in the soil for just about everything in my garden. The one exception is for the cloning of plants... I usually use straight coco or that with perlite for such tasks. I hear what you mean though.

"white fuzzy mold" "upon closer inspection it looks like a mycelial cake"
That was mycorrhizae bro. 90% of plants have mycorrhizal relationships.

But to that extent? Where mycelial vallies are busting out of the drainage holes and blowing up in every which way? Also like I said, that potted specimen was going to be very close to my oyster mushroom project, I didn't want to chance it regarding contams... And at first I thought it was a no no for succulents and cacti to have mold/fungi in their growth medium... At least to that extent. I'm new to grafting and growing pereskiopsis though was just trying to protect my babies.
