A concerned member PM'd me and pointed out that hye feels this statement on our site:
Quote:
Amanita muscaria does not occur in the USA except for the yellow form that grows in the PNW.
Is incorrect.
Is it? If so, we must change it of course.
Shine your light!

There are many in the Amanita muscaria group that grow in the US, but they all muscaria variants and so named.
We have Amanita muscaria var. guessowii, Amanita muscaria var. persicina and Amanita muscaria var. flavivovata.
They all have the same effects as Amanita muscaria though.

I am not up to date on my Amanita info, but am slowly trying to get back into the swing of things. With that said, what has become of the name Amanita amerimuscaria? I know several years ago this name was being used for red capped collections found out west, but has been deprecated for some time too.
Does anyone know if Rod Tulloss's work regarding the matter is near completion? I have a mind which has problems processing information unless I am repetitive about it, and past substance abuse actually helped me out in a huge way when trying to learn, but being of a clear mind now, I take a bit longer to focus and absorb the information.
Also I would like to add, the brownish/red capped muscaria type which is found out west, and that is Amanita regalis, it's often confused for a darker version of Amanita muscaria, which it's not.
I think in the future the name Amanita amerimuscaria might be used for red capped collections out west.

yup. Alan and I have made porcini, lobster mushroom, muscaria pasta using a method where we only parboiled whole muscaria once with no ill effect.
also the pasta was super yummy

arora calls for two 7 min boils with diced muscaria discarding the water both times
we did one parboil for 10 mins with whole muscaria and then discarded the water
i think a year after this my lady friend and i were cooking up a batch of muscaria. she wanted to try the tea. BUT. parboiling removes both toxins the sort of get you high/mellow one and the throw up one. but we kept it all the same. then we had like a part at the house and i told everyone they were welcome to try it though it meant they might throw up all night. 12 people tried it. 5 threw up. only 3 thought they felt anything.
if you want that effect (negligible though it is) you should dry them (which removes the throw up chemical but not the mellow chemical) and either make tea or toast the muscaria and make crackers.
as a food source though its really yummy. light nutty flavor and good texture.
as a drug it also tastes pretty good. the tea was actually super drinkable and it had been sitting in my fridge for like 2 weeks.
theyre definitly worth cooking up

That is true for Amanita muscaria sensu stricto, but if people are looking to consume, there are many varieties of Amanita muscaria that do occur in the USA. Mostly semantics unless people are super into the newest taxonomy, which is still in flux.
