WBS contaminated with bacteria?
    #23675780 - 09/25/16 03:17 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I started this jar about a week and a half ago doing Foo Man's WBS tek. I used mulitspore to agar. I didn't do any transfers with the agar. This one jar is kind of a test jar since I did transfer a small piece to more agar and wanted to see what the rest of the plate would do. I shook it about 4 days ago and took about 3 days to get to this point. I use cut up and glued filter disks for GE. Don't know if you could smell anything through the disks, but it smells like WBS. Not myc or funky bacteria smells.

I was planning to G2G this to 3 quart jars, but I'm a little worried since my last attempt from multispore syringe had bacteria to.

I can, but I only have like a month before it gets way to cold to do anything. So far out of the 5 projects I have done I have yielded about 10 grams :/ I really only have a spring and fall to do anything.

I'm going to try the the dish that I transferred a piece from this last plate. Hopefully it's clean. It looks like it, but what do I know!

Of course we do, but Japanese houses are not insulated and I really don't feel like running a kerosene heater all winter. I also have a oil radiator heater, but running that for a month last year cost me about $400.

I also had to pretty much had to seal a small section of my house last year because of the lack of insulation, which we know isn't very good for air circulation.

Cold enough to snow. The coldest it gets is -3C, but that's in the middle of the night. Usually stays at about 0c. This years summer was hotter than usual, but it gets any where from 35c to 39c average and humid.

I can't believe I'm saying this but maybe you can make a tub in tub incubator.  Back when I first started this hobby with pf cakes, I lived somewhere that was really cold and did not have heating at all I used a water filled big tub with aquarium heater in the water and another small tub floating on the water with colonizing jars in it.  It restricts gas exchange so usually it isn't reccomended but in your situation I think it might be useful.

I used to open the tubs and fan with the lids to help with GE; all jars colonized nicely.

Terrible plan warm water is gonna be riddled with shit after a very short while and low airflow only makes it a lot worse for mold and shit.

I've done all this all last year. I have an incubator that I can regulate the temp if I wanted, but I'd rather not. I may use it just for agar, but no plans to inoculate anymore jars this year if the last plate I have does not work.

Just really disappointed in all the work I've done and money spent and nothing to show for.

Averaging 10 grams a year really sucks.

You could be negative about it or look at it as progression, you'll be more careful as a result getting more shrooms in the end

Yeah I know, but when you only have a 4 month window to do all this it's pretty disheartening.

Yeah get what you mean it would be frustrating. Maybe make a thread in cultivation explaining your problem and I'm sure there will be members with a similar if not the same problem and they'll be able to best advise how to get around it. Pasty would probably know I'm sure I've read he's lives in a cold place may be remembering wrong

I've done lots and lots of reading. Thing is though most developed countries have insulated houses and maybe central heating. Japanese houses have none of those luxuries. We have kerosene  heaters, tables with blankets on them and a heater under, and lots of layers to keep warm. The lack of insulation is so the house can breath in the summer even though mold gets to everything, and for the carbon build up from the heaters to escape in the winter.
