Oat straw smelling strong
    #23674466 - 09/24/16 04:20 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I soaked some oat straw in lime and gypsum 2 wks. ago. I pasteurized it today and when i drained it, it smells like the oats are rotting somewhat. There is no mold and oats are sprouting some. Can i still use it to inoculate with oyster spawn? Thank you.

I have picked wild mushrooms for over 30 yrs. I built a grow room for mushrooms in the early 90's and grew oyster mushrooms with great success for the first attempt. Out of 20 bales i only had to throw 3 out because of contamination. Now i want to grow again. I currently have King and Blue oyster mushrooms in the GC. The mycelium is going nuts. It is growing through the cardboard boxes i used. I also have some in plastic bins and one container growing on cardboard. In two containers the mycelium is like cotton and over an inch tall....

I don't like to soak straw or wood for that long. The times i forgot soaking straw or woodchips I noticed a bad smell and the soaking water was slightly milky. I tossed it out. Better safe than sorry.
