Subject: The safety of hunting for actives of the Panaeolus species
    #23674419 - 09/24/16 04:04 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Hi everyone!
I'm curious about how difficult it is exactly to conclude that a specimen is indeed of the Panaeolus species. Would you be able to conclude based on macroscopic observations such as dark mottled gills, striate pattern on the stem, a black spore print, and a hygrophanous cap?  Or are macroscopic observations simply not sufficient.

Also, once you have identified a mushroom as Panaeolus, does that mean that it is safe to consume? I haven't been able to find any Panaeolus species which are considered inedible (besides foenisecii which doesn't seem terribly toxic and is questionably psychoactive). I'd like to hear your thoughts!

There are no poisonous Panaeolus species, some of them may cause indigestion if you eat too many. They also taste bad. As long as you have black spores the only toxic species would be some inky caps such as Coprinopsis atramentaria which contain coprine and will make someone sick if consumed before or after consuming alcohol.
