A Newbies trials and error's

So a friend gave me an old liquid culture...
My first growth was kind of exciting..

Until it grew out a bit more.

So I transferred the white section top left to a few fresh dishes

But I'm kind of concerned that Im just caring for some random mould instead of what I was told was Puerto Rican mushroom mycelium!

So I found the smallest amounts of spores left on some tin foil that was wrapped in a plastic baggie and set them out

You should use a loop or swab not just scrape/sprinkle your spores on your dish. Looks like far to many increasing your contams chances

Agreed. If you haven't already, look up Mad Seasons guide to agar-ing with a smile.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21889950
Read this and adhere to it, it'll improve your agar technique immensely dood.

I totally agree, what size loop should I get, the shop here has from 1.5mm all the way up to 6mm.
They also stock plastic disposable ones but I guess thats not good for the environment

your basically only using a speck so size isn't really an issue I suppose a thicker wire will pick up more per dab, but I doubt it would really make that much of a problem

Well the sandwich as suggested is underway but i dont expect it to grow out

and the dish that i thought just had the spores on has started growing allot more than just the spores, the spores have gone bright white but then theres other dots of light grey all over the place, that inoculating loop as suggested I bet would have stopped this!

The idea with the first plate is to transfer the myc growth before the contams can grow out. So if you do get some confirmed myc growth cut it out and transfer it straight away don't let it grow out.

I can still see some of the bigger bits of the dark colored spores, they have a ring of pure white around them, other smaller spots of spores are now the same pure white, i guess i should transfer them now even though they are only like 1-2mm in diameter??

Yeah i really dont have much at all but i can see these white spots are from the visible spores i dropped, the other not so white areas did not have visible spores that they appeared from
