How wet should the casing layer be?
    #2367194 - 02/22/04 07:58 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

It's been nine days for my latest casings and I have yet to see any pins/primordia. The casing layer (60/40) looked dry so I cut a small chunk of it off with a sterilized knife and squeezed it between my fingers. If I really squeezed hard, I could feel a little bit of moisture in it, but not much. I have not been misting since my ultrasonic setup keeps the relative humidity at about 93% all the time. I figure that with humidity that high, that the water would evaporate out of my casing layer is very unlikely. Am I wrong?

I was always told that...well just recently myself I found out that the verm should be like putty but not dripping. You should be able to pack it into a ball and it will stay...thats the best description I can think of.

From http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23461/ :

How moist should the casing mixture be?
The casing layer should me moist, but not wet.
A good way to determine the correct moisture is to squeeze a handful of casing layer in your hand. When you squeeze it, not very hard, a few drops of water should drip out.

So really, I should be misting every day.

I think I should clarify something....this Q&A taks about the initial moisture of the casing mixture. It doesn?t want to imply that you test the moisture of your casing layer by squeezing it AFTER it is applied (at least not as constant mesuring tool). So again, before you apply the casing layer, you test it by squeezing. After that, you judge the moisture by its appearance. It should look moist, but not wet.

Read this for more info on the casing layer:
