Mycelium color ; orange, white : why ?
    #23664118 - 09/21/16 05:01 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Lots of punctuation in the title. I felt like trying some new keys..
Okay I searched a bit on this but couldn't find a good answer.

What explains the different colors of the mycelium ?
P. cambodginiensis left, P. cyanescens on the right

Do they absorb different nutrients ?

P. S. agar is MEA

I don't know enough about the different strains to give a definitive answer but...... I have 2 plates of cubensis, treasure coast and golden teacher. The plates are way too nutritious so they are very slow growing and mono looking fuzzy balls. The treasure coast looks a bit more rhizo and white while the golden, while still white has some faint orange hues to the expanding growth. it may just be dryer myc. When I look at the underside of the plate, it looks very orange but again that might be an illusion since the PDA is yellowish and with the myc on top it forms a denser deeper color.

I've also observed that the goldens have a bluish hue center mass that's elevated where the spores paired. I'm wondering if that is a trait of the strain or just environmental factors.  Oddly enough I have these same bluish nodes on my GT hpoo trays.

I inoculated the plates on 8/20 and the TC has 5 pins growing on it, the teacher has none.

I think i rambled and probably made things more confusing but wait till the cyan gets a little denser and compare the colors?

Still white..

I don't think it's just the density of the myc. But if a plate with green coloring can turn yellow as the myc eats it, maybe er... idk

Help?

The color is probably the output of co2 ?? Clear or colored will still have discoloring from the myc consuming it i have some pda that is almost orange but my mea is coming out a light yellowish the pan cyan is probably not as far along is my guess as to why it hasnt changed color??

i'm no expert but if i was dealing with this situation i would think that the best plan would be to assume it's contams and to try and  transfer some clean sectors from the outer-edge areas which do not have the coloration and just hope you get past it in the next round.

so are you suggesting that this is purely a case of nutrient metabolization?

Idk. Both those plates look sketchy to me. Lots of disorganization and satellites.. the first pic especially looks off. Not at all like my panaeolus experiences.

The growths in the middle of nowhere near the edge of the plate. Generally from bad technique.

I bet if he let the cyans grow out more, he'll see some orange appearing under it too. Im assuming it's just colonizing into the agar, and those are the metabolites.. not entirely sure, but I almost always have orange spots under established mycelium.

I just dropped one drop of spore solution on the plates. What's the problem if it starts from the edge and grows towards the center, since you're gonna transfer a piece of the newest myc?
How would you do it mad? Maybe drop the spores and NOT move the plate at all so they germinate in the center? Or use a loop or swab?
