Eastern Slippery Jack? (Suillus granulatus??)
    #23669662 - 09/22/16 10:23 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Suillus granulatus??

http://www.mushroomexpert.com/suillus_granulatus.html

Mushrooms Demystified had it pegged as Suillus Brevipes, but the stem doesn't match and this is Michigan, so mushroomexpert.com had it at granulatus.

I want to verify this is edible, so I can sample the species.  I don't suppose it is amazing tasting, but I want to try it as I never had anything in this branch of mushroom before!

Habitat:
Growing with 2 or 3 needle pines, not many-needle pines, there was even a white pine some yards away.

This is growing in fall Sep 23, 2016 in Michigan.

Gills:
pores, straight, see pic  Suillus family..  not big, very small pores, maybe 2 or 3 per 1 mm, no distinctive pattern

Stem:
Less than 3cm, not wider on bottom than where it connects to top.

The stem has no visible dots near the top, it was just fibrous, on the outside but otherwise unremarkable.

Cap:
Slimy as it was whet, brown, cinnamon brown.

Cap skin peels very easily.

Spore print color:
Looking closely on the stem, it was leaving brown or cinnamon brown spores.

Bruising:
Bruised brownish or even yellow where fresh.

No turning purple when cut.

Other information:
Clean smelling, faint pine smell.

No veil or sign of one.

Taste:  Took a taste, it was not peppery.  It tasted like cucumber, just not as wet.

---------------

Edible slippery jack???  There was 5 or 6 growing there, I can go back and pick them tomorrow.

And if it is edible, are slippery jacks even good tasting???

2016 was a good year, +5 lb of Morels, and I ate 8 new species of wild mushrooms:  Herecium, Chanterelles, Black Trumpets, Parasol Mushroom, Fairy Ring Mushroom (marasmius oreades), Wild Oyster, Slippery Jacks, Honey Mushrooms (found over 100lb, froze 4lb in my freezer.)

idk, I'm not local and you have species not in my book. S. pseudobrevipes might fit.
