A spore print would greatly help in identification. Some more information such as; Did the mushroom bruise any color; what does it smell like; Measurements. It's most likely not active. Here is a link to a sample ID request. It's a good outline on how to achieve the best results from an ID request.

I was thinking pluteus Americanus because I'm right by the Minnesota border and they are know there

Does it have a white spore print? Just because the gills apear to be a light color does not mean the mushroom will produce a light colored spore print. The gills look sinuate (notched) not adnate (attached) to the stipe. It's size seems a little small for M. oreades. If it had a blackish brown spore print I would personally presume it to be Panaeolus foenisecii.
