1st time growing Blue Oysters... done in a SGFC

I know Blue Oysters do not do well in SGFCs and they need an ass load of FAE, but I'm a hard headed dumbass that is always up for "made to fail" challenges so I figured I would give it a shot. Here is 1 of 8 cakes I produced:

I used the standard PF tek with some adjustments. Despite the adjustments, the mushrooms came out less than ideal, but overall I am pleased with my results so far, especially considering this is only my 2nd attempt at growing mushrooms. (grew some cubes a few years back)
Any advice for improvements is more than welcome and thanks for checking out my project.

Drop the verm to wood rich compost, check this out. No need to worry about FAE or humidity.
Rich fruits from a cake or block.

He needs to worry if he is still putting them in a SGFC

Right on, Thanks for the advice. I'll give that a try.
Question, would spent cakes work as spawn? I ask this because the next step of my experiment was to crumble the spent cakes and spawn some pasteurized straw.

Should do, fully rehydrate the spent cakes, could even try enriched water (Read the WL Tek).
When it comes to fruiting with my "All natural" method, you can use your SGFC. Just follow the all natural tek, the holes will do their job.
Excess water drains, pretty foolproof. No need for a lid, lots of FAE.

Thanks! There really are very few things as rewarding as growing mushrooms!

I absolutely agree! They look great! Spot on with humidity but they do need more FAE. Assuming your SGFC is built correctly: do you have a fan in your room? Do you have a window cracked? They seriously need a ton of FAE.

Yes I do have a fan on it and I have the lid propped up at a 45 degree angle. It's super dry in Colorado (considered a desert climate) so the battle between humidity and fresh air is brutal. I'm gonna try large sandwich baggies with pasteurized straw in larger SGFCs with no lid. My hope is that the bag holds the moisture much more so that more fresh air can be applied.
Right now, I think the fresh air required for these blue oysters would dry out the cakes faster than they can remain hydrated to produce fruits.

If you crumble spent cakes you will be dumping contaminants into your pasteurized straw. Cakes are not good for spawn unless they are super clean and fresh out of the jar. As they sit in your fruiting chamber spores land on them, but because the cake is fully colonized it doesn't contaminate right away, but it will still be carrying contaminant spores. Once they are spent they often do contaminate, so that's probably not going to work very well

I get that, but it's just an experiment. So far so good though. I have 9 bags spawned with 6 cakes I used after their first flush. All nine bags are about 20% colonized with no signs of contams yet. I have enough liquid culture to fill a bathtub, so I'm not too concerned with tral and error.

Have you considered upgrading to a Greenhouse? You can get away with making one pretty cheap.

Yeah, I actually have one. It's 8'x16', but as I mentioned earlier, I live in Colorado so I am allowed to grow a little bit of the Devil's lettuce and right now my greenhouse is full of Sour OG and Beast WiFi.

I've seen mushroom bags marketed to weed growers, if I remember correctly, at $60 for 5lbs of colonized substrate. The gimmic is that it boosts CO2 in your grow room, requiring less FAE. Tradd Cotter does the same thing, but the other way, where he puts plants in his mushroom rooms to boost 02. I'm a super noob when it comes to mushrooms, so sorry if that's terrible advice, obviously not applicable to SGFC. But I do have xp with weed, so if you move your lettuce grow indoors over winter, they make a nice couple, and I'll certainly try it if I have another indoor grow now that I'm into Gm and can do it for much cheaper than $60...

My trade list Looking for strong terrestrial fruiters for an outdoor beds experiment: Agaricus Bitorquis, Agaricus Augustus, Agaricus blazei/subrufescens, Stropharia Rugoso-annulata, Clitocybe Nuda (blewits), and any species or other genus that you think work outdoors. Also, any commercially viable Pleurotus, cold or hot strains. Thanks for the Q&A, trades, and all the posters & teachers that have come before us
