Pelecyphora growers, little advice please
#23667117 - 09/22/16 03:52 AM (7 years, 4 months ago) |

Hey guys i wonder how many here grow/have grown these from seed?
I have a variety coming, I am most excited for the aselliformis ones i think they're so pretty
May I ask, what soil mixes do you guys use for this group please?
I was considering a little soil, perlite, stones and some akadama?
Any advice would be great please, I soooo dont want to kill any!!
thank you

I treat my Pelecyphora aselliformis and P. strobiliformis in the exact same way I treat my Ariocarpus, Obregonia, etc.: mineral soil, careful with the watering can. The two Turbinicarpus frequently associated with the genus are a little (a lot?) more forgiving.
As for sowing, ALL my seeds go into a purely mineral mix screened to the appropriate size (2-5mm). Of the ingredients you mention, akadama is the one I would use as the base for my mix (I use lava rock or scoria or whatever is called over there).
Expect very slow growth from P. aselliformis, a little faster from P. strobiliformis. These are seedlings from 2011, the wooden thing above is my most valued tool for repotting - a chopstick.

Thats great thanks, so ill use the akadama as the mian with a variety of stones and such. I wont add compost or limestone though. Or perlite i guess.
How on earth is a chopstick handy lol?

Are you kidding??? There's no better tool to tuck compost into the rootball, dislodge a plant from a tray or, with a sibling, maneuver a densely spined cactus at repotting time! It's the single most useful tool you could possibly have. That and a blade is all you need.

A few of my P. strobiliformis - easily the most prolific of my cacti for producing their own sprouts. Evidently self-fertile, but I have never actually seen any fruit or seeds - the seeds apparently drop invisibly from the dried ovaries to the soil. A coarse, gritty soil mix with some lime does the business.

I grew them once from seed and they grew awesome like Zed's there and then some worm ate the tops. Fucking assholes. So that was that. But yeah everything brother Zed said.

Cacti taxonomy change - possibly too fast for many of us - but I believe(from my most recent texts) there are now just TWO Pelecyphora species - P. aselliformis and P. strobiliformis. Until a few years ago Pelecyphora was a monotypic genus - until Encephalocarpus strobiliformis (also formerly a monotypic genus)was included in Pelecyphora.

I give up trying to understand cactus taxonomy!
I know i seem to like little round ones, i favour lophs, the round astro not quads or watever theyre called, i like one turb, i like these little pelecyphora too. And asteroides, i ordered those with others above, and he added some ive no clue about til i look them up
Im hopeful i dont find too many more i like ha.
I will message you about those above, theyre beautiful o.0 id gladly take some off your hands for postage.
Ive also seen a turb gets sold as a pelecyphora too, and vice versa hahahaha!

Pumice is great for cacti. I picked a couple of bags from the Great Swedish Furniture Chain Store and it looks very nice, a bit heavier than I expected (meaning it's better) and I will put it to the test the coming weeks.

What does pumice even look like?
I bought a huge bag of black love rocks that I have to break down somehow to use for my Lophos, Turbs and other picky cacti

Well my akadama and pumice are here, my seeds arent though lol
Yes, pumice looks like rough perlite lol.
So for my mix for pelecyphora seeds and cactus i was thinking of using akadama as main, pumice and maybe a little compost? No perlite lime or other stones.
Do you think theyll like that?
