dry bottom casing layer?
    #2366614 - 02/22/04 03:23 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Is dry verm okay to use as a bottom casing layer or should it always be wet? Had trouble with bottom layer getting too wet and becoming especially prone to contams. Thought a dry layer would act as sponge for excess water. Been thinking now that it may suck precious water away from the casing resulting in less available H20 for fruits. Thoughts? Experiences?

don't saturate the bottom casing layer...the water in the bottom layer will add water to the substrate increasing yeild(theoretically). a dry bottom layer WOULD pull the water from the substrate, so it's not really advaisable to do.

It will help if you sprinkle 1/4" dry vermiculite, then put your moist casing on top of that. Spraying the casing material after it cools with h2o2 will also help in preventing contams. About a 1:20 ratio is good. (Edit: I mean spray with straight h2o2 not diluted. 1 part h2o2 to 1 part casing material) The dry stuff at the bottom will also absorb any of this extra liquid
