8 inch substrate waste of 1:3 spawn? 1

I'd like to double the amounts of bulk sub & spawn in each tub in order to save space. Normally, I use 3qts coir, 3qts vermiculite & 2qts WBS spawn. My spawn jars are only 75% full, but the bulk qts are full to the brim, which is more than a qt. [gradient:#FF0015,#]Tub size: 27qt L16.5" x W13" x H12.25"
1. If I doubled all my bulk & spawn in each tub, would there be something I should do differently? More moisture in subs, etc? I've read here that it will make larger or taller fruits, which I thought was simply due to genetics IME with agar when I've isolated a strain.
2. Is it better for coir/verm to be more on the wet or dry side? Only when I squeeze as hard as I possibly can, the drops become a small stream.[/gradient]
3. I don't want to waste any tubs, so I'm also using 4 tubs that are shorter, but same LxW, but only 6.5" tall. Would this still work if all poly fill holes are at substrate level? I would do thick stuffed poly on the long sides and lightly on the ends. Would that still work? Tub size: 16.5" x 13" x 6.5"
Anyone who has had experience with this, any comment would be appreciated greatly.

Why not just make 2-3 normal monos...in the end you would still have far more surface area for the fruits. Not only that, what if you do this, and it contaminates? Instead of putting your eggs all in one basket, spread the love along 2 monos. I don't see it being beneficial in any way.

Any one else have answers for questions 2 or 3?
I've never grown bulk in these 6.5" tall tubs. Is there a HUGE difference between where the poly fill holes are, relative to the substrate?
I've been doing this for ~5 yrs and I know either wetter/dryer bulk has to has to be more effecient. I even soak my colonized WBS for 20min right before I toss into the bulk. Can they really even reabsorb water at that point?

With straight coir dryer is better but mix with verm makes less muddy and easier. Ive tried this once with a difference sub heights it doesn't increase water or yeild after 5 inches and 12 inches always contamed. Yes they can absolutely take more water with 20 min soak. But if sub is fine your just wasting myc health.

Great info. Thanks. I'll be making 5" tonight!

I still don't see why you can't just make multiple monos

With research and experience, I've found less is more in regards to substrate thickness. I've pulled mushrooms 5 - 7 grams(dry weight) off of substrates 2" thick. Anything thicker than 4" is a waste of materials and time/money prepping materials IMO.

What you describe is proper field capacity of your substrate, which is ideal(moist). Being a little on the dry side is ok. You can always add more moisture later if need be. Wet is no good.

Holes at substrate level should be fine. Honestly, it's one of those things that you are going to have to tweak as you go. Pay attention to your substrate. If you are not getting any evaporation of moisture from the surface, you need to increase FAE. In this case, loosen your poly, or make more holes, or both.

The thickness of these trays are about 1-1.5" thick.. 5" is such a waste IMO, and holes are DEFINITELY nowhere near substrate level. More like tray lip level..

Its probably a waste im assuming he doesnt want to check it or water it untilbig fruit comes in. In terms of yeild per qt of grains 2 inchs thick trays misted and high fae wins hands down. But for him its about the extra work involved. Think oh yes i have to clean out 10 trays, pasteurization 5 bacths of sub and have to baby sit and clean green house and run machine's to baby sit the green house. All for 2.5 bounces per tray or 25 ounces total.
Or make one graint mono with two pasteurization bacths and one cleaning. And not have to wacth the tub until fruit arrives and then pull 15 ounces off a few flushes. The lazy wins for the big scale growers.

Dafuq are you even talking about? You can pasteurize/bucket tek the exact same way, and same amount regardless. When pasteurizing, I can do enough for 1.5-2 tubs of substrate per run, or enough for 10-12 trays with the same run.
You can also easily line trays so no need to clean the trays, and do them in a tub instead of a gh. As seen by my pix of trays in a tub. But all I was trying to say was that 1-2" of sub can perform just as well as 5", and with 2 tubs instead of one, you'll have much more yield in the end.

I agree with the other. More tubs = more surface area = more yield.

Been experimenting with sub depth a bit, haven't found any better yields after about 3 inches. I get maybe 1 or 2 more flushes with thicker subs but honestly I'd rather just huck the sub after 3 flushes any way and move onto new grains that are on deck waiting.

well, the bottle teks give pretty close to the same in weight to the amount of substrate with waaaay less surface area.
explain that.

The bottle tek also isn't pushing out 6-8 ounce flushes. That's all the explanation I would need

The bottle tek uses a lot less sub than the standard mono because of the gaps in between the containers.
It's really only 3/4 qt substrate x 15 bottles per tub = 11 1/4 qts including spawn.
I'm not sure but I think the standard mono needs somewhere around 10 qts sub PLUS your spawn. that would be 15 qts total.
So that's a 25% reduction in what weight you should receive per tub.
so say 6-8 oz per tub reduced 25% is 4.5-6 oz per tub for the bottle tek.
Just to put things in perspective for you.
