Has anyone seen anything like this?

Growing on wood, I'm not sure what type but lots of oaks and birch around. It is wet and when you touch it it is almost like getting ink on your hands and stains slightly. I tried looking though some field guide and the internet, but I cant even get it down to possible genera.

idk, I thought Daldinia but you mentioned ink and I deleted that post straight away, but maybe Daldinia and the black could be moist spores.

So I don't think its Daldinia or Exidia . The closest thing i can find right now is Hypoxylon thouarsianum, but I cant find anything about the inkyness. I'm assuming the liquid is produced by the fungi because the last rain was about three days before I found it.

If there is a chance to return, assuming nobody has other suggestions, a cross section would be most helpful.

Please include a location in your requests. It doesn't need to be exact, just at least a country or region eg PNW.

I actually collected a couple of the buttons from the stump I can take some more pics and cut one in half later this afternoon. It was found in the Midwest.

Heres the pics, you can see the inkyness I was talking about on the bag. The mushroom itself is also fairly hard, however, it cut easily.

Still tempted to call it a funky Daldinia, the interior is frequently gelatinous (I searched that doc for the word and couldn't find one at your location that mentioned a wet exterior and not very concentric but that might be easily explained - I'll let you). Still a mystery to me.

Hmm I'm still not convinced. I'm waiting to ask this guy I know who is in charge of the mycology society around here if he knows what they are. I'll let you know what he says.

Im still thinking its Hypoxylon or maybe Annulohypoxylon. Though if it was Daldinia it could just be first years growth and thats why there arent any rings.
